What a new year! Still not published.

Wow, things have been crazy since Thanksgiving. Do you believe that bad things come in threes? I'm starting to! Let's hope it's just threes.

As far as good things, I was at my dentist and told him about my book "A Knight In Glendalough" and wondered if God was giving me a sign to hold on to the hope of getting published. It came up, my book. Then he looks at me and says, "You won't believe this, my daughter is a publisher." I didn't. I thought he was messing with my mind :) So I give him my title and email and it's all I can think about every single day until my next visit! I am actually looking forward to the dentist! I rush in there, a copy of my first few chapters all printed out and in a nice little folder for him.

He's on vacation until March.

I would be understating it to say that I was crushed. But I have faith, and hope in things unseen. Maybe I should make four or five appointments for the dentist this month?? Was it wrong for me not to want to leave the copy there, all alone, in the office for two months? It felt like I would be leaving part of myself out there, lying on a shelf for the entire time.

I did send out another copy to an agent that takes email submissions. I got a very nice "It's not you, it's us..." rejection email back about three months later. That was nice.

Homeschooling is going great. Today we are learning about rejection. Er, I mean calculus. I got a basic intro to calc online and my 11 year old seems hip to the idea so we press onward into realms I do not understand. I expect we will learn a lot together this week!

For my 7 year old it's grammar. Oh, and following directions! It may sound strange to public school parents, to spend time on that, but it's an area he's having trouble with so we face it, head on.

Lastly, my parrot is driving me insane!!!! Is there a 'time of the month' for birds? It's like he is purpously choosing the loudest, most brain-piercing sound and trying to make my ears bleed, all day long!!! I move him around, give him treats and new toys, cuddle with him, even put him in front of the tv! Yet he keeps going and going. I think he's trying to be heard by the cute little cockatiel we saw at the pet store three miles away.

From the Blogger in question!

I was actually at my dentist's office for dental work. We were chatting and he mentioned that his daughter is an agent. Well, this seemed like 'from God's mouth' kind of stuff, so I told him I would bring in a few chapters for her to hand over to her. He said that she was looking for a book and an author. Hey! That's me!! Sadly I have not tracked him down since as the dental 'office' is a clinic type and the docs rotate. I didn't even get his name :( Novacaine makes me tense, lol!

itll all work out

Your blog really made me smile. i blog on here as well, and occasionally check out others. yours caught my eye tonight. i think its so interesting everything you're doing, i guess thats the point. good luck with the book, and with the homeschooling, my daughter turns 4 this year and I think about her beginning school and everything that goes with it. i admire what you are doing, and cracked up when you talked about not knowing calculus, me either, and don't know what ill do when i get in that situation.

You did what?

You gave your dentist a copy of your novel to read? Why in the name of all that is sacred did you choose your dentist? Does the story have to do with dentistry? Please let me clarify: I am also a writer. I ran across your blog while surfing the net to avoid dealing with my next chapter. Now, returning to the point at hand, my dentist is as lovely a person as one could ever meet; salt of the earth, if you get my meaning. However, I would not have him read my precious novel for all the tea in Ceylon, India AND China. Oh, that is, until it is published; then come one come all. I suggest what you need is an interested literary agent and/or a good, with emphasis on the good, writers' workshop. Avoid university workshops; they are for the most part put together by scholarly types who are writer want-to-be's and are far to literary to have anything interesting to say. (Oh, and please excuse my spelling; spelling is only important in the last draft of your novel.)
