YORK COUNTY

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies will be doing special enforcement to look for drivers who aren’t wearing seatbelts.

They plan to step up enforcement patrols and hold checkpoints next week to try to get drivers to increase seatbelt use, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The enforcement is part of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

The department cites figures from the National highway Traffic Safety Administration that show that 62 percent of all passengers killed in car crashes in the state in 2006 weren’t wearing seatbelts.

The department will patrol with the help of other local law enforcement agencies, the release says.

“Click It or Ticket” is part of “Smart, Safe and Sober,” a joint effort of state law enforcement agencies, the Department of Motor Vehicles and Drive Smart Virginia . The campaign also is used in other states and the District of Columbia.
