52 homes near Chesapeake golf club tested for health risks

A company hired by the city has conducted water testing on 52 homes with wells around a golf course sculpted from 1.5 million tons of fly ash, a coal-burning byproduct that contains arsenic and other metals that could pose health risks.

City Manager William Harrell said Tuesday that the results will be returned within three weeks. He said the city is doing all it can to determine whether the Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville has contaminated nearby wells.

"I think we've moved pretty quickly to try to get a feel of whether there's a problem," Harrell said.

Residents have until June 20 to file claims against the golf course for any wells damaged by the project. The City Council also discussed legal issues related to the golf course behind closed doors Tuesday.
