Cox Enterprises said Tuesday it has named Sanford "Sandy" Schwartz the president of the company's newspaper division.

Schwartz, 55, replaces Jay Smith as head of Cox Newspapers starting May 1, according to a company news release. Smith is retiring after 37 years with the company.

Schwartz has been with Cox for 23 years, serving as an editor, publisher and vice president. His most recent role has been president of Cox Auto Trader, which runs AutoTrader.com. He will continue in that job.

Schwartz has spent time in Norfolk, where Cox Auto Trader has an office. Auto Trader once was part of Trader Publishing Co., a joint venture of Cox Enterprises and Landmark Communications Inc., which publishes The Virginian-Pilot. Trader Publishing was dissolved, and its properties divided between Cox and Landmark, in 2006.
