Norfolk Collegiate’s She’la White has been named a third-team All-American by Parade magazine, continuing a string of postseason honors for the star point guard.
White already had been named state private-school, All-Tidewater and Tidewater Conference player of the year. She also was the first South Hampton Roads girls player to earn a spot in the McDonald’s All-American game.
White, a 5-foot-4 senior who has signed with North Carolina, joins a short list of Parade All-American girls basketball players from South Hampton Roads: Princess Anne’s Kim Rodgers (2006 and ’07) and Norfolk Catholic’s Jackie Dolberry (1984 and ’85) and Dawn Cullen (1983). Parade began selecting teams more than 30 years ago.
“It’s right up there with McDonald’s and everything,” White said. “It’s just a great honor.”
White averaged 23 points, 5.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game as a senior. She led the Oaks to their first private-school state championship game and finished her career with 2,118 points. She played at Wilson High in Portsmouth as a freshman and sophomore.
This season’s Parade teams include five players from Virginia. T.C. Williams’ Tierra Ruffin-Pratt was named to the first team, Potomac’s Lynetta Kizer to the second team and Notre Dame Academy’s Azania Stewart and Brooke Point’s Chay Shegog joined White on the third team.
