Rochelle McMorris, 37

Suffolk

Occupation: Literacy teacher, Norfolk Public Schools

Children: Two daughters, ages 7 and 5

On motherhood: "A mother has to have an abundance of strength, courage, patience, a big heart and a great sense of humor. There is no work quite as satisfying as this. The smile and the hug of my children are the best 'thank you' I can receive. On the other hand, E.W. Howe once said, 'If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers.'"

Tammi Clarke, 47

Norfolk

Occupation: Sign language interpreter

Children: Two sons, ages 13 and 14

On motherhood: "It's like having your heart walk around the outside of your body for the rest of your life!"

Janice Dewes, 56

Virginia Beach

Occupation: Registered nurse; food service manager at a private elementary school

Children: Three daughters, ages 20, 23 and 25; one son, age 17

On motherhood: "I've learned that it's OK to have a favorite child - a favorite to shop with, a favorite to eat out with; a favorite to talk music with and a favorite to teach me how to work my high-tech gadgets."

Carmen Staicer, 38

Virginia Beach

Occupation: Freelance writer and cafeteria worker

Children: Four daughters, ages 13, 10, 5 and 4; two sons ages 15 and 8

On motherhood: "Motherhood is the hardest thing I've ever done. It's the most fulfilling, the most exciting and the most tiring experience of my entire life."
