Bon Secours files intent to appeal expansion decision

Posted to: Business

Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System has filed its intent to appeal a recent set of state decisions rejecting its plans for new hospitals in southern Virginia Beach and northern Suffolk, as well as for a downsized replacement of its DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk.

In March, the state denied the Catholic health system's reorganization plan, while approving applications by Sentara Healthcare to build a new hospital in southern Virginia Beach and expand Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk by 30 beds.

The state health commissioner on Wednesday received Bon Secours' intent to appeal all the decisions, including the approvals for Sentara's applications. The appeal would be filed in Norfolk Circuit Court, which would then transfer the case to another state circuit court for hearing and ultimate decision.
