Who's got the most dog? The Canine Sporting Extravaganza this weekend in Virginia Beach is one way to find out. In the DockDogs competition, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the jump in the dog. Any pooch can enter in the events, which are running down a dock and jumping into water for distance, jumping for height, and seeing how fast a dog can run the dock, jump into the water, swim to the edge of the pool and retrieve an object.
This is not the first DockDogs event for Hampton Roads hounds since ESPN introduced dock jumping in 2000, and some local athletes train with their human coaches for these competitions.
The dock at Care-A-Lot Pet Supply on Diamond Springs Road in Virginia Beach opens at 3 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. For a list of times of individual events, and entrance fees, see dockdogs.com.
Even lapdogs can get big air, so there are no restrictions against any breed, nor are there any size requirements.
Not only is the competition open to any and all dogs, but the same goes for their handlers; there is a Junior Handler class for those who are between the ages of 7 and 14.
