CHESAPEAKE
Four new traffic cameras will help residents keep an eye on backups in the city’s Greenbrier area.
Starting tomorrow, the cameras will go live on the city’s Web site, www.cityofchesapeake.net, according to a city news release.
The cameras will show traffic in real time, the release says. The cameras also can be viewed by public works employees from the Smart Traffic center inside City Hall.
When the cameras go live on the city’s site, residents will be able to monitor conditions at one of the city’s busiest areas all the time.
Already, the city has cameras pointed at the toll plaza at the Chesapeake Expressway. The cameras snap pictures that are posted on the city’s Web site and the images refresh every 15 seconds.

hear that noise
it's your tax dollars being suctioned out of your wallet.....
Too bad they're not Photo Red Cameras
They'd be able to identify and penalize people running red lights and slamming and injuring others!
Real Time
I hope I can access the site from my BlackBerry, then I will be able see where I am going.
I don't see how much these cost in tax dollars.
We all know that these cameras, basicly set up and maintained for the bennefit of the local media, are costly. But it would be nice if the article listed the cost involved. Such as planning, installation, materials, equipment, monitoring and maintenance. Chances are that the funds used to pay for and maintain these cameras, were taken from funds meant for road improvement and repair. So then we come down to a choice, do we want the road repaired or do we want a camera so the local media can show traffic cam for the people sitting at home? Projects like this is why we have no funding for roads at all levels of government. Hurricane gates, interstate cameras, smart traffix, railroad projects (such as the massive Rt 164 rail project for the port) and road projects to support the NIT and PIT and the new port in Churchland, are all examples of abuse of our tax dollars that should be going to fund road improvements. Come on PILOT, tell us the rest of the story, tell us the COST!
