Former NFL quarterback Aaron Brooks, shown below, and his company, Tidewater Partners Property and Development LLC, plan to transform 14 acres in southeastern Newport News into a mixture of housing and retail space, the city's Economic Development Authority announced Tuesday.
Brooks, a Newport News native who also played at the University of Virginia, was selected for the public-private partnership based on his proposal for the property in a predominantly black neighborhood. A market study found high demand for a grocery store at the site, known as the Southeast Commerce Center, and the authority hopes to attract national retailers and restaurants.
The city has provided no cost estimate for the project and still must sign a formal agreement with Tidewater Partners, which also is developing a residential project in James City County.
