The new exhibit at the Portlock Galleries at SoNo could easily be called "splendor in the glass."
Opening today and running through June 1, the Peninsula Glass Guild Spring Juried Exhibition will feature guild members' blown glass, fused glass, slumped glass and cold-cast glass. It will showcase all manner of styles, subjects and sizes from small bead works to large mixed-media pieces.
The South Norfolk art gallery's first ever exhibit featured works created by the Peninsula arts group, and organizers are considering this show as the guild's welcome return to Chesapeake.
The guild was founded in 1986 to showcase the varied glass art found on the Peninsula and to be a forum for glass artists for both educational opportunities and support purposes. The guild now includes members across the state skilled in all glass-art techniques.
Kelly Conway, glass curator at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, is slated to judge the exhibit's wide range of styles and techniques. A number of awards, along with prizes totaling $800, will be bestowed by Conway on the winning artists. The show's top three winners also will be invited back to the Portlock Galleries next year to be part of a special group exhibit.
The glass works can be viewed for free at 3815 Bainbridge Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from noon to 4 p.m. weekends. Call 502-4901.
