The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the nation’s tallest brick beacon, is reopening for climbing on Friday.
To kick off the new season, the winding trek up the 208-foot tower is free for first day.
Tickets will be still be required, and climbers are advised to get their tickets early. The tickets are distributed 30 at a time for each 10-minute slot.
“This is the second year that we have opened on the third Friday in April,” said Laura Sturtz, Hatteras Island sub-district interpreter at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. “In the past, we have opened on Easter weekend.”
The ticket booth opens at 8:15 a.m. and the first climb starts at 9 a.m. Tickets will not be given out after 4:40.
