CHESAPEAKE
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on May 30 for an 18-year-old Western Branch High student charged with bringing a gun to school earlier this month.
Antonio J. Atkins is being held without bond in the Chesapeake City Jail on two felony charges of possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a firearm by a violent felon, according to jail and court records. Atkins also faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon.
Atkins was arrested April 4 after a fellow student told school officials about the gun, police said. Officers were dispatched to the school, searched Atkins and found a .22 caliber hangun and ammunition, police said.
In addition to the gun charges, Atkins has pending court cases for felony grand larceny and misdemeanor assault and battery. He has past convicted in Chesapeake for impeding traffic and disturbing the peace, according to court records.
The preliminary hearing in Chesapeake General District Court is scheduled to determine if there is sufficient enough evidence against Atkins to send the case to a grand jury for possible indictments.
