Homer in 9th sends Tides to loss to Charlotte

Charlotte's Jeff Eldred broke a tie in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday with a two-run homer - his only hit of the game - to give the Knights a 3-1 victory against the Norfolk Tides in Fort Mill, S.C.

Norfolk held a 1-0 lead until the seventh and lost despite out-hitting the Knights 5-3.

Alex Cintron had two hits for the Tides. Jim Miller, who pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and surrendered the game-winning shot, was charged with his first loss.

The teams will conclude their three-game series at 11:15 a.m. today. Righthander

Hayden Penn (1-1, 5.52 ERA) will start for the Tides against Charlotte's Wes Whisler (4-0, 0.83).

 

Roster moves: Two Tides pitchers were called up Tuesday by Baltimore. Lefthanded starter Garrett Olson and righthanded reliever Bob McCrory were added to the Orioles' 25-man roster after infielder Brandon Fahey was optioned to Norfolk and pitcher Greg Aquino was designated for assignment.

Olson, 24, was 1-1 with a 1.85 ERA in five starts with the Tides this season. He is 1-3 with a 7.79 ERA in seven major league starts, all of which came in '07. He made his '08 debut Tuesday.

McCrory, 25, was 0-2 with a 1.80 ERA and four saves in nine games for the Tides this season and has spent his career in the minors until this point.
