PORTSMOUTH
At a memorial service marked by laughter and tears Saturday, family and friends packed Pinecrest Baptist Church to remember 16-year-old Meghan Landowski not for how she died but for how she lived.
They recalled her belief in God, her constant smile and her friendliness.
They remembered her as a dance and karate student, and, on an overhead screen, watched flashing images of her as a baby, as an older child sitting in Santa’s lap, and as a playful teenager.
Among about 500 mourners, a dance teacher recalled with laughter Meghan doing cartwheels in class. Since her slaying April 10, students have upheld that tradition.
“The girls have been cartwheeling for Meghan ever since this happened,” the teacher said.
During the service, a candle burned bright, a symbol of Meghan’s “eternal soul,” said the Rev. Tom Potter, the church’s senior pastor. He wore a pink tie in honor of the slain Woodrow Wilson High School student, who was found dead in her family’s home.
“She’s the only one who could get this man to wear pink,” Potter later said.
Police are calling Meghan’s case a homicide, and as of late last week officials had not released a cause of death.
Potter assured mourners that authorities are “putting everything that they have into this investigation” and “that justice will be done.”
“Whoever committed this crime should be shaking in their shoes and looking over their shoulder,” he said.
But the number of friends, neighbors and loved ones attending Saturday’s service was a sign that God already was having his day, Potter told mourners.
He called the memorial a day of love, hope and salvation.
A woman who had met Meghan only once stood and told those who had gathered that, for Meghan, “Jesus Christ became real.”
“She doesn’t even remember any of these things that happened,” the woman said of Meghan’s death. “God gave her a refuge place.”

It's time for PPD to own up to the facts.
They don't have a clue! It's been nearly a month now. PPD has said little if anything about the slaughter of this little girl. PPD has not asked the public for help via the media. PPD has not warned the public that a person capable of murdering a little child, who had done no harm to anyone, is running the streets and may be seeking out the next victim. I've read all the comments from what may be PPD members themselves. As I said before, I don't watch foolish television shows, so I have no clue what they are about. What I do know is that it has been nearly four weeks since a ruthless killer took the life of someones daughter, sister, niece and friend. Now it seems she will just be forgotten. There doesn't seem to be a public outcry, the press doesn't seem to be holding the PPD's feet to the fire, and the worst part of it all, the person responsible for this could be right behind you. Not a pleasant thought is it. I fear that a month from now we will still not have any answers and that this vicious killer will still be on the streets.
People assume because there
People assume because there is no news, that nothing is happening. I agree that we do not live in a 60 minute world (and I watch many crimes shows...CSI, L&O, etc and real life shows...First 48, snapped, Dominic Dunn. the first type are fictutious stories many times based on actual events, but not actual cases per se. The 1st 48 is real life, sometimes they break cases, sometimes not. The other real life shows are told after the fact, when the person has been arrested. Many times on these real life shows, you see that people are questioned and police ask for help but they don't always make an arrest, even when they're pretty sure who did it they follow the evidence and make sure that it is sufficient before jumping the gun and possibly having the case thrown out on a technicality. Even when they think someone is guilty, they still need EVIDENCE of that fact to charge the person. I feel it is much better to investigate thouroughly to make the charges stick rather than arresting someone to satisfy a few impatient people who jsut want to know for their own personal satisfaction. The police will use all resources at their disposal to solve this case. Some people seem to forget
Over three weeks now!
It's been over three weeks now and it seems Meghans brutal murder has been forgotten and PPD has released no information and the local press doesn't seem to be interest in finding answers as to why. Maybe that explains why Portsmouth has such a high number of cold cases. It's sad.
If anyone is still reading this.
It appears as though Rose was right. This childs violent murder seems to have been forgotten already. One can't help but wonder at this point, why the PD isn't on the news everyday asking for help in trying to find out who did this. Sad that someone can get away with murdering a child like this and there is no public outcry. Tells us something about ourselves I guess.
Applications Being Accepted
Sounds like Rose has all the investigative skills that any PD could ever ask for! I think they take applications downtown on a regular basis. If you can get hired, maybe you could advance through the ranks REALLY fast and make it to detective then YOU can take over the case and do what you think no one else can...solve it! Until that happens, leave it to the very qualified detectives to do their job.
Let them do their jobs...
Just because we aren't being given blow by blow information on how the investigation is going, doesn't mean it isn't going. No one wants to see this killer brought to justice more than those of us who knew and loved Meghan. I have no doubt that Portsmouth police are availing themselves of all the resources out there.
Why not volunteer?
I think Rose should volunteer to help the police conduct the investigation. Rose has seen every cop show on television and is therefore an expert in conducting a criminal investigation. If Rose is so perfect and all knowing, how come she hasn't come forward and broken the case wide open? Some people just hold a grudge against the police when their stupidity gets them into trouble. What happened Rose, you blow through a red light, or get caught stealing something? Get off your high horse and let the police do the job they are trained to do the proper way. Sorry that they haven't wrapped up the case in the allotted one hour slot (including commercials.) Hey Rose, quick, you are missing a rerun of Cagney and Lacey!
again...
Heres a news flash for you, in this day and age you shouldnt need the police to tell you to be careful. The publics help is always asked for in homicide cases where an arrest is not made immediately. What exactly do you base your opinion regarding the detectives investigative experience? I happen to know for a fact that several investigators have seen, investigated and solved homicide scenes just as bad or worse than this one. Rose you seem to be pretty good at Monday morning Qbing the PD, why not volunteer your services...Im sure they would welcome your help and ideas. Yes this is a sad incident however it is not the time to bad mouth the PD and bring their already low morale even lower...To think they are not doing everything they can and are not capable of solving this crime is insane.
I don't watch worthless shows on tv.
So I guess that blows any theory to the tv show you mentioned. I do know that the Portsmouth PD have not advised citizens to be on high alert of a monster that would murder a little girl in such a way. Since they are asking for the publics help, it indicates that they have no person of interest. If they have no clue of who did this, then no one is safe at this point. If it was a robbery gone bad, then there is a very very sick animal running around and we are not safe. If it is related to a previous attack, then the animal that murdered Meghan would not hesitate to attack someone else. Portsmouth PD has had NO experience in handling a crime as brutal and pointless as this. That's why maybe more experienced investigators should be brought in. I don't want to read in the paper two months or two years from now that Meghan's case has not been solved. I just wonder if the PD checked the gutter of the roof? Did they take a look at recent reports (like the nude man banging on the elderly ladies door in the early morning hours) in the area? The world has lost a bright shinning star in Meghan, this is truly a sad incident.
Life is not an episode of Law and Order
I knew Meghan; she was a sweet, lovely, happy young girl. I believe that the Portsmouth Police are working very hard to bring her killer to justice and will ultimately succeed. We have to remember that life is not an episode of Law and Order, and that catching and successfully convicting a killer takes longer than an hour.
Part 2
By the way...its called a police investigation for a reason. Its not a public investigation because the more information that gets out the more it helps the killer(s). Who is to say whether or not the FBI or the State Police are or are not involved? To say these dedicated cops arent capable of doing their job is ludicris...investigations take time and God forbide they make a techinal mistake just so a bunch of Monday morning QB's are satisfied an arrest is made in a hurry. Im sure the family would prefer an arrest that sticks not one that is made too fast and some snake in the grass lawyer finds a way to get the killer(s) off.
What I know
Rose, I of all people understand your frustration. Everyday I think that I'm going to wake up and realize that this is a nightmare and not a brutal reality. Meghan's killer WILL BE found. The detectives in Portsmouth are working round the clock to figure out who would have motive to slaughter this very loved girl. Just because the police and the media hasn't been told that there are leads or suspects doesn't mean that there aren't any. As messy and malicious as Meghan's killer was you can bet that they was DNA left behind. Would you won't the news to report that they had fingerprints, hair samples, or even skin cells from this horrible excuse for a human being just to kill your curiosity? Then what happens when this piece of junk hears this and flees to Mexico? All because the public needs proof that the underpaid, hard working Portsmouth Police Force is actually doing their job. Believe this if the police need experts, they will be brought it. Whether it's from surrounding cities, NCIS, or the FBI, Meghan Nicole Landowski WILL NOT be a cold case. Justice will prevail and Meghan's Killer WILL be sought.
I want to thank the Portsmouth Police Department. You are very important to o
meantime the person is walking among us.
If that's talking "stupid" Cole, then so be it. If the PD has an idea of who did this, then why are they saying they have no suspects? According to reports the PD haven't figured out much. Meantime, the person that would murder an innocent young girl is still walking among us. If this was random, any of us could be next. If it was a person that had, in their mind, a reason to kill an innocent little girl in such a way, then there should be enough reason to hold that person during an investigation. There seems to be enough reason to keep a young man in jail for the murder of a policeman, even though much evidence points towards it being an accident. I can't speak for everyone, but I can say that I don't feel safe and I'll fear for my family until this animal is caught. If PPD is not capable of doing an investigation or making a case, then they should bring in someone that is. Wasn't there an article reporting the multitude of "cold cases" in Portsmouth last week? Tells me something.
Get help on this case
I agree with Rose. Whoever committed this crime needs to be brought to justice now. If the local PD can't figure it out, they need to get state police or even FBI to help. I get more disapointed every day I don't see an arrest for this heneous crime.
I feel your pain
but don't let your pain make you talk stupid. Portsmouth Police Department has some very experienced homicide detectives working 24/7 on this case. Stop and think why they aren't saying much. Duh??? Loose lips sink ships. Let the police do their job.
Meghan
I had the pleasure of knowing Meghan she was a beautiful person inside and out. In the last commit it was stated that Portsmouth PD need to find someone capable of solving this terrible tragedy. First of all what needs to be remembered is that it has only been 10 days. DNA and Autopsy reports take time. This was most likely a premeditated attack and the Killer would have tried to their best to cover there tracks. Trust me when I say that I know the police in Portsmouth are working day and night to find this horrible person. They are talking to everyone and looking high and low. I love what Rev. Potter said yesterday, 'this person is shaking in their shoes and looking over their shoulder.' It will happen! They will be caught! God is here for us as family, friends, and community until then. Just keep praying for justice.
As far as the media goes I appreciate that they have continued to following up with Meghan's story. But the family has to go on with their daily life without the precious girl so maybe the constant coverage needs to slowdown until there is something to report. May.God bless you all and Justice prevail.
I feel for the family and friends of this young girl.
She was truly loved and will be truly missed. Maybe Portsmouth PD should bring in someone more capable of finding her murderer. I feel like the press and the PD are not doing this family or this young victim justice. This story should be on the headlines every day until her torturer and killer is brought to justice. If the PD has no idea who killed her, they should be warning the public to be on their fullest alert. If someone is capable of murdering an innocent young girl, who has done no harm to anyone in such a vicious way, they wouldn't hesitate to kill any of us. Why is the PD being so tight lipped about this? Why is the local media so willing to push this under the carpet? I am not going to let my kids very far out of my site until this animal is caught.
