NORFOLK
Police on Monday released a partial description of a man sought in the fatal shooting of a Navy lieutenant who was walking with his family last week.
Lt. Todd Michael Cox, 40, was fatally shot around 8 p.m. Thursday as he walked with his fiancee and two children along Beverly Avenue, a block from Granby Street across from Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.
Witnesses told police that a man got out of a truck and fired repeatedly at Cox and then got back into his vehicle and drove off.
On Monday evening, Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman, said police are seeking a medium-complexioned black man, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, of medium build, with a short, natural hairstyle. He was wearing a light shirt and blue jeans.
The vehicle is believed to be an early to mid-1990s white and green Ford F-150. The paint scheme may be white over green, or green over white, police said.
Amos said the case is being pursued vigorously.
Investigators do not believe the incident was related to any kind of gang initiation, he said.
“This neighborhood is so quiet. It’s just unbelievable that this happened,” said John Myers, who lives a few doors from where Cox was killed.

For Matt
Todd was a great human being and I am so sorry that you lost him. I was glad to know Todd and do a deployment with him. He had a great personality and was a very dedicated Naval Officer. I assume that he put the same effort into the relationships with you and your family. I pray that as time moves on, the pain starts to fade and that you and your family are able to find happiness in your lives again. Todd may be gone but will never be forgotten by those that knew him.
Todd Cox
that man was going to be my step-father.
he was such a nice guy. he didn't deserve this at all.
we didn't deserve this at all.
and why?
Where is tha Norfolk City Council?
Where are the big shots on the Norfolk City Council, in response to this cold-blooded murder. Where is Councilman Riddick, who seems to have an opinion on almost everything...he is strangely silent on this subject. Mayor Fraim, too... the citizens of Norfolk deserve better public servants than this.
short, natural hairstyle?
What do they mean by a "...natural hairstyle?"
Serious Concern
I feel extremely bad for LT Cox's family. This is indeed a tragedy. What is disturbing is the manner in which he was slain. It seems "hit" like with the deliberateness of the attack. Additionally, no one else was shot, meaning this person was not worried about being identified by witnesses. Why not? What could possibly motivate someone to do this?
Very sad.
HELP FIND THE KILLER
I am so saddened and outraged by this incident! I cannot believe one can so easily forget "Thou shall NOT kill!," let alone kill in a way that is so senseless, pointless, and defenseless.....and right in front of the eyes of his family, which includes young children! I hope the community feels as strongly as I do about assisting with finding the person/vehicle that fits these descriptions. He (the truck) could be found as easily in a "for sale" classified, where he is trying to get rid of the truck and place it in the hands of someone who is totally innocent of this crime. Be WEARY! If it takes posting WANTED signs all over the city to find this evil one, consider it done!
Is it surprising to anyone else?
But where is the outrage? Where is the public outcry? Where are the rants about crime in the city? Oh wait- it's just another day in the city isn't it? I'm sure the detectives are vigorously investigating this case and I hope for the sake of the victims family they make a quick arrest. What amazes me is that Paul Riddick isn't ranting and raving. Actually I am NOT surprised!
