Northbound Chesapeake Expressway open after being closed by crash

CHESAPEAKE

The northbound lanes of the Chesapeake Expressway were reopened about 3 p.m. after being closed because of an overturned fuel tanker truck on the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway.

No injuries were reported. One small motor oil leak and a fuel leak from the cargo tank were quickly contained by firefighters, said Capt. Steve Johnson, fire department spokesman.

The truck turned over and ended up straddling both lanes about 11:40 a.m., Johnson said.

The fuel from the cargo tank had to be pumped out before the truck could be turned over, Johnson said.

“It's dangerous to right a truck with a petroleum product without offloading it first," Johnson said.

Firefighters launched a boat to make sure no fuel spilled into the waterway, Johnson said.

Traffic jam!!

This is a prime example of a traffic night mare. People have been complaining to the City about the overcrowding and traffic congestion. If there is a major accident on the by-pass all traffic is redirected thru down town Great Bridge! My point is our City is proposing Great Bridge Village District. With mix use and more business! How can this area handle any more business and traffic? I just do not get it! It takes you 15-20 minutes to get 2 miles, then the bridge goes up! Traffic signals need to be adjusted to allow more cars through per cycle. Let the City solve traffic issues, no more development! We are tired of being squeezed in by traffic and business!!
