RICHMOND - State Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, who had been mentioned as a possible candidate in the 2009 Attorney General election, has announced he won’t run.

“I understand the sacrifices my family would have to make in order for me to seek statewide office at this time, and they are too great,” said Obenshain in a written statement issued Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, the only GOP candidate officially in the contest is Sen. Ken Cuccinelli of Fairfax who announced his plans to seek the seat earlier this month.

Other names discussed in political circles as potential Republican entrants include Hanover Sen. Ryan McDougle, former state Del. Paul Harris of Charlottesville; and former Arlington School Board chairman David Foster.

On the Democrat side, possible candidates include Del. Stephen Shannon, D-Fairfax; Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke; and Finance Secretary Jody Wagner, a longtime Norfolk lawyer.
