CHESAPEAKE

A Portsmouth man is scheduled to appear in court June 4 on charges of malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and eluding police.

On Saturday, a Chesapeake police officer stopped a vehicle for reckless driving near North George Washington Highway and Canal Drive, police said.

Police said the driver drove off when he was ordered to place his hands on the steering wheel. The officer, who was hanging on to the window, was dragged approximately 150 to 200 feet before letting go and falling to the pavement. He was treated for minor cuts at the scene.

Chesapeake police searched the area but were unable to find the driver. Portsmouth police located Charles D. Brown, 26, of the 2800 block of Elm Avenue, at his home. Brown is also charged with reckless driving.

Police did not release the officer's name.
