The public will be allowed to comment tonight on the real estate tax rate in Chesapeake.
City officials are proposing no cut to the general real estate tax rate.
But they want to cut the tax rate for the mosquito control commission from 2 cents to 1 cent per $100 of assessed value.
The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers, at 306 Cedar Road.

Real Estate Taxes Should Drop!
With the downtown in the mortgage industry, slowdown in home building, increase in foreclosures, tightening credit requirements, dropping housing prices accross the country, doesn't it make sense local property tax rates should drop as well? I think so! And I'm sure many other area residents do as well. Some local cities are looking closely at their current real estate property tax rates and determining if a drop in rates is appropriate. Chesapeake should do this as well.
CHES PROP TAXES
It's not the rate so much as the assessed value. No way can I sell my 40 year old house for the current assessed value. Will Chesapeake buy it from me? As a retired person a fixed income, Chesapeake is forcing me out, as I can no longer afford the tax........insurance is getting awful also, but that's another gripe for another time.
