Great Bridge baseball team has ODU connection: Three Great Bridge senior baseball players have signed with Old Dominion: Phil McCarthy, Hunter Parrish and Brandon Shelton. Even Wildcat coach Wiley Lee admits it is a bit unusual to have three guys going to the same Division I school.

Indian River wins first berth in state tournament: The Indian River baseball team beat Granby 7-3 in the Eastern Region semifinals Wednesday night to earn its first state tournament berth. The Braves, who finished in a tie for fourth in the Southeastern District, have won five straight postseason games.

Recruiters flock to see Booker T. big man – DeShawn Painter drawing huge interest from big-time programs.

CHEERLEADING

Cheering not just rah-rah stuff at Western Branch -- There’s more to cheerleading than just yelling in a megaphone. Ask the Eastern Region champion Western Branch squad.

CREW

Row, row, row your (bigger) boat – After finishing fifth in the country in a four-person boat last year, girl rowers from Norfolk Collegiate move into the varsity eight shell.

CROSS COUNTRY

Scholar-athlete at the top of Bishop Sullivan Catholic senior class – Runner Will Hoey achieves balance between sports and the classroom. He scored 1,600 on the SAT.

Norfolk Academy team on track for community service – Helping out in the community is part of the deal with the Bulldog cross country team.

FIELD HOCKEY

Akers twins take the field together – Identical twins Rachel and Alison Akers make an identical choice about college – they’ll both go to Longwood on scholarship.

Granby goes pink – The Granby field hockey team wears pink uniforms as it dedicates its season to raising breast cancer awareness.

Fliers rush into danger with masks – The most dangerous position in high school sports is the one played by girls who fly out of the goal to stop shots on penalty corners.

Sister vs. sister: A family dilemma – It was a tough day around the Bonsall household as Kellam senior goalie Mary goes against her sophomore sister Jean, who plays forward for Landstown.

FOOTBALL

Sky’s the limit for Indian River’s Mosley – Indian River senior lineman Dion Mosley III is about to get his pilot’s license after years of study.

Norcom player an up-and-coming model – Norcom sophomore linebacker Monte’ Robinson is equally comfortable on the football field and the runway as a fashion model.

ODU’s first recruit expects to lead the way – Maury defensive back Ricky Nichols is the first player to commit to the new program at Old Dominion.

Jones a Hokie who came from out of nowhere – Green Run defender Joe Jones was an unnoticed senior who wound up with a scholarship to Virginia Tech.

Shear pleasure for Atlantic Shores coach – Seahawks football coach allows his team to shave his head at halftime of a basketball game as a reward for the players after achieving a team academic goal.

Seven Maury athletes sign scholarships – On signing day, more than a half-dozen Commodores received scholarships. 

Meet new Landstown football coach Tommy Reamon: Reamon is a former NFL player who has been a head coach at Warwick and Gloucester in recent years. Reamon emphasized to his players that he is as much about developing them off the field as he is on it 

GOLF

Golf team offers tips from their famous fathers: Greenbrier Christian's golf team has won its first 10 matches behind a core of players whose fathers are big names in the local golf community. The sons show tips they've received from dads George MacDonald (former touring pro), J.P. Leigh (standout amateur for decades), Timmy Newsome (pro at Riverfont) and Jeff Wolfe (top amateur).

GYMNASTICS

On balance, beam can be score breaker – The balance beam can make or break most teams’ scores in big competitions.

Strausbaugh’s perfect 10 – Kellam junior Kirsten Strausbaugh scored a rare 10 in floor exercise at the Eastern Region meet. Her coach, and mother, break down the routine.

Sammy salvages her senior season – First Colonial gymnast Sammy Frazier had the skin ripped from her hand and arm and her wrist crushed in a late-summer car accident, but she remained a part of the team by working as a volunteer coach.

GIRLS LACROSSE/HORSEBACK RIDING

Nansemond-Suffolk's White will ride on after lacrosse: When Nansemond-Suffolk senior Olivia White sees her lacrosse career come to an end, she'll ride on to her next sports season. The University of Virginia-bound White, who has been competing in horse shows since she was nine, is gearing up for a summer of activity on the Arabian Horse Show Association circuit.

BOYS SOCCER

Time out with: Ocean Lakes goalie Rory Mills: Rory Mills, an acrobatic and vocal junior goalie, is the last line of defense for the third-ranked Ocean Lakes boys soccer team. Coming off a school-record eight shutouts last year, Mills demonstrates what it takes to play the position well.

Bravo for the heart of the Churchland soccer team: Cuban-born senior Adrian Bravo is the man who makes the fifth-ranked Churchland soccer team go. He's smart (going to William and Mary on an academic scholarship), prolific (15 goals scored), feisty and is in his third year captaining the Truckers. 

GIRLS SOCCER

Soccer, acting, singing all a stage for Kaitlin Jones – Norfolk Christian junior is slammed this spring, starting on the soccer team, rehearsing a lead role in the school play and traveling to Italy for a chorale competition.

At Cox, there's a Fee to play three sports: Stefanie Fee of Cox may be the area's best female athlete. She was an all-state pick on a state championship field hockey team, an all-district choice on a region-qualifying basketball team and an all-state defender on The Pilot's top-ranked girls soccer team. The Duke field hockey signee has started in three sports since she came to Cox.

SOCCER

Highlights of Cox boys and girls in state quarterfinals: The Cox girls soccer team advanced to the state semifinals with a 4-0 win over Westfield Tuesday night at the Sportsplex while the Falcon boys saw their season and the 26-year career of their coach, Jim Snodgrass, come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Robinson.

SOFTBALL

Draper twins charge Western Branch battery: Even the Western Branch softball players have trouble telling their pitcher and catcher apart. Sheri and Teri Draper are identical twins who have been playing pitch and catch together for nearly 10 years. The junior double-your-pleasure battery is one of the reasons the Bruins are ranked No. 5 in the area. 

Salem’s Knight the strikeout queen in softball: There's no hittin' Salem senior Kendra Knight. Following a season in which she struck out 377 batters in 180 innings, the University of Maryland-bound Knight has already fired four no-hitters and fanned 140 batters in 67 innings coming into games the week of April 21. Did we tell you she can swing the bat, too?

Kellam gets chance to defend state title: Although Kellam suffered key losses in the infield and on the mound after winning the state softball title last year, the Knights have retooled and won the Beach District regular-season title, the first step toward defending their crown.

SWIMMING

Jones has common name, uncommon talent – First Colonial’s Becca Jones is the area’s best swimmer and a two-time state champ. 

BOYS TENNIS

After a year on the sidelines, Fraser at the top of his game: Cox junior Ian Fraser is the man to beat in next week’s Eastern Region singles tournament. Fraser, the son of Princess Anne Country Club pro John Fraser, might have won the title last year, but no one will ever know since he was academically ineligible.

TRACK

Lakeland high jumper on the rise – Senior Chris Copeland won a national indoor title and cleared 7-0 feet in the high jump this winter. 

Landstown 4 x 400 relay flies into Penn Relays: The Landstown girls 4 x 400 relay, which finished second in the country indoors, is taking its act outdoors to the Penn Relays this week. The Eagles relay, composed of Division I signees Cierra McGee (North Carolina) and Kelnesha Hinnant (James Madison), 200 indoor national champ Marlena Wesh and standout hurdler Taylor Wheaton, are going for the gold.

There's an Artis on the track at Western Branch: After limiting his work in the Southeastern District and Eastern Region meets, Jeffrey Artis of Western Branch, the state's best hurdler, will compete in four individual events at this week's state meet as the Bruins try to win an outdoor title to go with their state indoor crown.

Highlights of state track meet: See the terrific performances turned in by South Hampton Roads athletes at Saturday's state track meet, where the Western Branch boys and Landstown girls won team titles.

VOLLEYBALL

Charity and teamwork, one spike at a time – Great Bridge boys volleyball team plays annual fund-raising game against alumni to benefit CHKD.

Volleyball player back on the court after heart attack – 15-year-old Chase Holderby suffers heart attack early in season, but returns to help First Colonial make a playoff run.

WRESTLING

He gets his kicks boxing opponents around – Kellam wrestler Mike Holcomb is not only a state champion, he’s the nation’s No. 1 kickboxer in his age group. 

Undersized Woods stands tall on mat and in classroom – Nansemond River wrestler Vernell Woods has been a 103-pounder for four years, but lack of size hasn’t prevented him from achieving big things.
