NORFOLK
One of the teenage girls accused in a mob beating death in East Ocean View pleaded guilty Friday to charges of murder, malicious wounding and robbery.
Skyler Hayward, 17, faces a maximum penalty of life in prison when she is sentenced in September.
The beating happened July 27 in the 9500 block of 16th Bay St. A mob stripped and beat three men. Two victims managed to run away; the third, James Stanford Robertson, 19, of Georgia, died.
In court Friday, Hayward, dressed in the black-and-white stripes of the Norfolk City Jail, spoke softly in response to Circuit Judge John C. Morrison's questions. Her mother attended the hearing, but declined to comment afterward.
Ten people have been charged in the crimes.
Hayward has testified against some of them in previous court hearings. She told a juvenile court judge that she and other girls charged helped lure Robertson and his friends to a parking lot so that members of a gang could rob them. The gang members hid while the girls waited for Robertson and the other men to show up.
