Posted to: High Schools Sports

Eastern District tournament

When 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; Semifinals and final in singles and doubles at 3 p.m. Friday

Where Old Dominion

At stake The top two singles players and top two doubles teams advance to the Eastern Region.

Boys outlook Top seed Justin Smith of Norview completed an undefeated singles season and is the favorite to replace the graduated Stas Stekolstsikov of Granby as the league champion. Kyle Moore of Maury, the second seed, will be bidding to give the Commodores the district singles title for the 16th time in 17 years. Smith and freshman Trung Trinh of Norview and Maury’s Moore and Noel Flemmer are the top two doubles teams.

Girls outlook Defending champion Ashley Foster is favored to repeat, having easily dismissed second-seeded Stephanie Oswald of Maury in their lone meeting. Oswald is a foreign exchange student from Germany and has had a stellar season for the Commodores, who won the district title, defeating the Comets 6-3. Oswald and Erin Godbout earned the top doubles seed after defeating Foster and Angelique Marshall 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 during their regular-season dual.

Southeastern District tournament

When 9 a.m. Monday (girls) and Tuesday (boys), Wednesday at 9 a.m., Thursday and Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Where Howard Mast Tennis Center, Suffolk

Girls outlook Western Branch’s Hannah Hill completed an unbeaten season in the district to secure the top singles seed. Hickory’s Gabrielle Krupp, who was district runner-up last spring, is seeded second. Krupp and Casey Fitchett are top doubles seeds, having beaten second-seed Meagan Epley and Amanda Johnson of Great Bridge 9-7 in a pro set during the regular season.

Boys outlook With three-time champion Bryce Parrish of Great Bridge now playing at Mary Washington College, the door is open for one of regular-season champion Western Branch’s stars to assume the title of the league’s best player. The Bruins’ Josh Lee is the top seed, followed by teammate Bobby Kostinas. A final between those two could be a reprise of last season’s quarterfinal in which Kostinas survived in three sets. Kostinas went on to reach the final. Also, watch out for Grassfield’s Dylan Quinn. In doubles, top seeds Kostinas and Sam Karr, finalists a year ago, will try to complete that final step this week.
