Traffic heading from Virginia Beach toward Suffolk on Interstate 64 is at a halt near the High Rise Bridge in Chesapeake after a tractor trailer truck caught fire and burned.
The lanes were still closed at 11:20 p.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said both eastbound lanes - which actually carry traffic in a westerly direction along that stretch of the highway - were closed as of 9:37 p.m., and it was unclear how soon traffic flow would be resumed in the area.
For the time being, eastbound traffic is being diverted onto I-464 north, VDOT said.
The on ramps to I-64 east, from I-464 north and south are closed.
State Police and fire crews are on the scene. There was no immediate report of any injuries.
The location is near mile marker 294.
