Vandals hit nearly a dozen properties in Freemason neighborhood

Posted to: Crime News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Freemason residents awoke Tuesday to discover obscene and crude vandalism marring roughly a dozen properties.

"It's disgusting," said Wendy Nuzzo, restaurant manager of Omar's Carriage House at 313 W. Bute St., where vandals painted the side of the building and scrambled onto a low roof to paint the second floor in the rear. "Everybody's angry and upset about it."

Hardest hit was a building at 308 W. Freemason St. owned by a foundation linked to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Vandals painted racial epithets, vulgar words and crude drawings around the rear and side of the building. A man was painting over the words and images by early afternoon.

Vandals also hit doors, windows and a satellite dish around the neighborhood; several white garage doors off Freemason Mews bore black and blue paint.

Omar Boukhriss, who owns Omar's, said he wants the neighborhood to appear safe and appealing. "This is not the message we want to be sending," he said.

Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman, said the vandalism was not believed to be gang-related. Police were investigating but had not made any arrests, he said.

The city has been gearing up to fight graffiti with a program called Tag-Out, which will enlist residents to aid in spotting and eradicating graffiti. The program will start soon in an area bounded by 38th Street, Tidewater Drive, Hampton Boulevard and Olney Road.

A Replacement Use For Gitmo

Wouldn't it be nice if the National Guard could rid America's cities of these gang members and ship them straight to Gitmo. Squid and well-water makes a cheap meal.

Find them and book 'em

I'm fed up with these punks spraying walls and signs all over town. Can't we find out who is doing these dirty deeds? I would question everyone jailed and get them a little break if they help find the people who are defacing our city. You can barely go anywhere without seeing gang signatures on walls, street signs, which I would think we could seek out the leaders and hold them accountable. The Freemason crowd need to spend some time in jail. Please seek them out

Comment by Omar in the Video..

I picked up on the comment by Omar in the video about how sad it is that this was done in the Norfolk area when the city is trying to become a "big city". This what happened is part of what comes with being a "big city"...This stuff happens constantly in "big cities"..Don't know where he's from originally but maybe he need's to look into moving to Idaho or Iowa or something to fill safer...

Cane

When miscreants are caught, cane their behinds and make them clean things up.

Not Projects

That wasn't done by folks from the projects. There was nothing about that even remotely associated with gang tagging.

WoW! I'm Impressed...

A chilly dark monday night, streets virtually empty and
the kids get creative. It's time Freemason was reminded that they are a part of Norfolk too. Although a violation to private property, we must admit it is a non-violent crime - and probably a competition among the young folks. It sure trumps the work that was done to the bus station - these kids have gumption. Now if we could only get them to paint the non-descript NET buses... that would be so cool.. urbanized.
These artist are probably Maury High Alum. It's their school district area..

Re Vandal's "Message"

"Dummy Squad"...They are aptly named, as well as properly identified as related to their "wisdom", &/or "intelligence".........

Mmmm....

Define "rich people". At what point do you actually become "rich"?

Hmmm, looks like the

Hmmm, looks like the projects hit again

*sigh*

Hmmm looks like the rich people can't control their kids :-(
