A two-vehicle wreck on the Manteo-Nags Head causeway killed a Virginia Beach man over the weekend and injured two Outer Banks men, a state trooper said Wednesday.

Patrick Obryan Gilpin, 30, died after the 2008 Nissan Xterra he was driving west on U.S. 64 near Pirate's Cove at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday crossed the center lane, hitting an eastbound 2000 Chevy pickup driven by Michael Anthony Caleo, 30, of Nags Head, said North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Bray.

Traffic on U.S. 64 was blocked for about four hours, Bray said.

Caleo and his passenger, John Silver, 21, of Wanchese, were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Silver was discharged Tuesday, a hospital spokesman said. Caleo was listed in fair condition Wednesday.

Bray said Gilpin had purchased the Nissan only hours before the accident. The investigation is continuing, he said.
