Woman who may have had rare brain disease dies in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH

A 22-year-old woman who may have had a rare degenerative brain disorder that has been linked to eating beef from cattle infected with mad cow disease has died.

A nursing supervisor said the woman, who had been unconscious at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, passed away about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The state health department said earlier this week that it was investigating the case, looking to see if the woman had any of a range of neurological disorders.

One possibility is a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as vCJD, a rare degenerative brain disorder that has been linked to consumption of contaminated beef. The disease is not spread through casual contact from person to person.

There are also other forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as CJD, that are unrelated to beef consumption. State officials are looking into those as well.

A Beloved Friend Leaves Us

It is such a tragic situation....I could not bear to see her the way she had become.....I think about her everyday, I will truly miss her...She will always be in my prays.....I often think about the people who careless about living and her she stood in her prime doing things, going place, and developing a life for herself to be abruptly halted...One thing I know is I do not ask the question why, for all things have a purpose, this I know......... It is time for everyone to enjoy life because we all have a set date to leave here, we just don't know when that is.....We did not have to opportunity to say goodbye to her while she could understand it...But her sweet memories will live on in us, those that love and cared for her!
May God Bless You Areatha!!!!!!! Hate to see you go, but glad you are not suffering anymore!!!!!!!!!
