Hiking, biking, canoing and fishing are available year-round in this beautiful wildlife refuge. With more than 111,000 acres of forested wetlands, it extends into Suffolk and North Carolina. Who knows? You just may see a black bear or bobcat.

Go to battle ... in Great Bridge
The Battle of Great Bridge, fought on Dec. 9, 1775, was the first Revolutionary War battle on Virginia soil. It marked the end of British rule in the state. Riveting reenactments take place annually at the site.

Take a hike ... in the Northwest River Park
As you hit the trails – from one-quarter mile to 2.5 miles – enjoy a variety of fauna and flora. Up for a little more challenge? The ropes course or canoing on the Northwest River beckon. Enter at 1733 Indian Creek Road, about 3.6 miles east of Battlefield Boulevard.
Get cultured ... at Portlock Galleries
Officially, of course, it’s Portlock Galleries at SoNo, which includes artists’ working studios, creations and stores. The former Portlock School hosts exhibits, classes and art camps. It’s up to you, then, how artsy you want to be.
