VIRGINIA BEACH

Police took two North Carolina teenagers into custody Thursday in connection with a series of crimes, including a crash hours earlier that left a teenage girl dead and another injured.

The wreck capped a police chase that began shortly after 2 a.m., when a vehicle struck a pedestrian at 26-1/2 Street and Pacific Avenue and drove away, Virginia Beach police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital for treatment and released later in the day, Barnes said.

An officer spotted the vehicle suspected in the hit-and-run and began pursuing it. The high-speed chase continued across Laskin Road and onto Holly Road. The driver of the Suzuki Aerio lost control, and the vehicle flipped several times and struck a tree in the 800 block of Cavalier Drive, Barnes said

The driver ran away. A 17-year-old girl in the Aerio was pronounced dead at the scene, while another girl in the vehicle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Barnes said.

Officers fanned across the area and used dogs and air units to search for the driver. They picked up the suspected driver and a teen who was not part of the chase after finding them at a bus station on Laskin Road.

Barnes said the four were from Durham. They are suspected in a robbery in Virginia Beach and might have been involved in crimes in North Carolina, he said.

Your WRONG, we can defend our home in VA, and I am glad we have that right. I am not at all happy when we are subjected to irrational attacks by our own police departments. Two families are paying the ultimate price for it.

Must Be a Cop Lover

This comment is to swhitney6488. You evidently have never been harrassed by the VBPD. I've never seen a police department as rotten as the VBPD. Get a life!!!

Fergus

Bitter much? At this point, your comments should be null and void of any value since all you can do is harp on one event that occured over two decades ago. Should you maybe applaude the fact that this current force of police officers is out solving crimes and pursuing criminals, and actually succeding in their efforts? What city do you live in that has had a 100% solve rate for the last 22 years? Find a therapist, in your own utopic city please.

Myrtle Beach Better

Maybe the Myrtle Beach tourism marketing pitch will draw away the "crime" tourist too!

On the other hand

Maybe the young driver of this car accident will someday go on to serve over forty years in the United States Senate.

Huh?

Everyone keeps talking about the suspect getting away...the article says the driver was caught.

Re Comments Criticizing The Pilot's Reporting & Stories

*From Ask The HR Editors..Blog
"Our goal with reader comments is to harness the community’s knowledge and interact in ways that improve our journalism and readers’ understanding of the issues.
Occasionally, a post will illuminate another fact we should consider in our coverage of events.
Readers also provide another perspective.
Finally, since we do believe in the First Amendment, we also want to provide a public forum for honest debate."

My point is that criticism offered by reader's comments appear to be taken into consideration by the Pilot in their efforts to achieve their goal.

Eh

Live by the gun, die by the gun

Identity

Again, a bunch of young hoods wreak havoc and death and still will remain anonymous because of their ages. It is time we start to identify these people so that we the public can be on the lookout for our lives. At least if you know who the hoods are, you can prepare yourself when you are around them. After all, hoods don't punch a time clock. They are opportunist, striking when it is the best for them. Identify them, give us a chance not to be victims. These hoods were from North Carolina. I am going to take a wild guess that they were being looked for in North Carolina and possible Virginia had a "be on the lookout" on them. It is time to take a hard line on these "kids". They know what they are doing is often going to be overlooked because of their ages. They should NO longer be able to hide behind their age!

what a shame

What tragedy that a group of friends have destroyed so much. They are suspected of committing a robbery, a young girl, too young to die, has lost her life, an innocent predstrian hurt and the rest of the teens with injuries and hopefully guilt that sticks with them enough to make them learn from this experience. What a shame their families will have to deal with this pain too! How terrible!

Never cease to amaze me

Someone runs over a pedestrian and flees the scene, the police officer tries to do his job and catch the guy before he does it again, and people automatically start bashing the PD. Simply amazing.

Naturally, if they had called off the chase and gotten away, this website would be ablaze with comments calling the PD worthless because they didn't even try to stop them.

Put some blame on the driver, who's actions killed one person and severely changed 2 others.

Hmmmm

High speed chase?? I prefer, "High Speed EVASION". It's more descriptive, since the Police are doing their job, while the CRIMINAL is performing the criminal act. The laws need to be updated. Attempted evasion of a police car flashing blue light and sounding siren should be an automatic 10 years in prison. After a few people get 10 year sentences, then the problem should slow down dramatically. As long as people only get a slap on the wrist, they are not going to care.

always the ones to blame

I dont know how every time there is an incident in Virginia Beach, automatically people have to critique the police. If this idiot hadn't hit a pedestrian, regardless of what his "story" is, then there would be no conversation on what the police did or didnt do and a young girl wouldnt be dead. Why arent we commenting on the problems of youth in our society, or the crime this kid committed, or the fact that a life was lost because this kid decided to run from the scene? It makes me laugh everytime i read one of these comments where someone who has no idea how police policy works, decides to comment on how the police handled the situation. And the comment about doing a ride along with the police..its a great idea, you can learn alot, maybe some respect.

Sickening

"With 1 out of 3 criminals dead, a .333 batting average would be good in the majors. The way I look at it, Darwin took care of at least of the weaker individuals in society."

The story describes the person killed as a "girl." It sounds as though the driver was up to no good and took off. It may be difficult for a "girl" to jump from a speeding car. Your suggestion she is a criminal for being a passenger is false. I hope Darwin's theory aims it's sights on the feeble minded as it should and removes you from the breeding pool. Sicko.

Looking to commit a crime? Choose Va Beach

The driver couldn't have picked a better city to commit a crime in. The inept police in Va Beach will never catch him. I've been waiting for 21 years for them to solve the murder of a friend of mine in Va Beach.

Law abiding 3rd shifters

So are all the people who work the night or third shift non-law abiding? These are the people that make your day job/life possible. Don't be so quick to pass judgment and label people.

2 am @ the oceanfront

I'd rather walk through a minefield than walk anywhere at the oceanfront at that time.

hit and run

there is always someone trying to second guess everything.if this were a speeding violation or a ran red light i would argue the point of putting life or property at risk in a high speed chase.what this individual did was the same as shooting someone, they didn't care if they had killed someone or not.vb police are pretty smart people they will get this individual eventually.

Pursuit protocol, part 2

I believe the situation was handled the best way possible, and strongly suggest, as did another poster, that swd2k needs to become a reporter for he/she seems to believe the Virginian Pilot left out details, etc. I believe that swd2k needs to do a "ride-along" with the VBPD to see exactly what they deal with on a daily basis and just how difficult and dangerous a job they have. Maybe then he would have some respect and better understanding of just what the job entails.

bay colony

so this is probably the reason there were helicopters and dogs around my house last night.. My friend texted me at 3:30 am this morning, "some dude who had just killed someone kept ringin my doorbell theres helicopters and dogs searching for him in my yard and my neighbors."

This is pretty exciting news for VB.. and 'the suspect is still at large.' I'm sure he woke up this morning wondering what happened last night...

Support your Law Enforcement Officials

The men and women who choose to work in law enforcement should receive the admiration and respect of those they serve. They are highly trained and are not compensated nearly enough for the risks they take performing their duties. They certainly do not need someone who is not a trained law enforcement official second guessing their every move.

planeles

if anything Darwin's theory did not hold true because the individual that was behind the wheel and reponsible for hitting a pedestrian and killing a passenger got away and is still alive. its completely irresponsible and disrespectful to say that the person who died was a "criminal" and got what they deserved. you have no idea of the events that transpired and what was going on in that car.

LICENSE ??? what good is it? if the vehical is stolen

Let the cops do their jobs, the best way they can with what they have This crime happened at 2 am when all us law fearing people are in bed or working...Great job VABVD stay with it catch stupid Im sure his surviving buddy will tell you what you want to no..

Comment

"Hundreds of cops in cars at the beach front"....what planet do you live on? Do you honestly believe there are hundreds of cops sitting in cars at 2 am? I wonder if the driver had hit one of your loved ones if you would be so quick to suggest the police just get the license plate number (assuming the license plate even matched that particular vehicle) and worry about arresting the criminal later, if at all. And how would you then prove who was actually driving the car?

Good job, VBPD!

Now catch the creep and charge him/her with everything you can!

Let me get this straight

Ok, the officer gets the license plate number. First, you have to depend on the people to keep their DMV information up to date when they change addresses. Now, you go to the house and talk to the owner of the car. You ask who was driving the car during the pursuit. The owner says "what pursuit, I don't know what you are talking about." One little lie and the officer cannot arrest the registered owner of the car. Remember, you not only need to know who did what, you need to be able to prove it in court. There are many cases where the officers know who did what but lack the evidence required by the courts to convict the offender. As for surrounding the area with officers, yeah right. I remember trying to patrol the Second Precinct on midnight shifts. Many nights we were trying to cover the nine patrol zones of the precinct with five or six officers. How in the world can you surround a large area like this with so few officers. And that is only if those officer are not on other cases to begin with.

yeah, that would work

So what you are saying is that the Police should get the plate number and then let the person go and maybe stop them again? What if the person takes off again? We got the plate number so it will be OK, we will catch them again........ They committed a felony by hitting the guy in the first place. This might be just a guess, but based on the time and location, I would say that the person driving was drunk, and that might be the reason they left the scene, but that is just a guess. Just one more thing to add, what if the plates were stolen or the car was stolen, then we would never find out, according to your thinking, who was driving the car because the police would be looking for the wrong person. The police take ALL factors into chases. Time of day, where it is, conditions. I don't think your kids would be playing outside at 2am, so the "putting others at risk" is way out there. The Police did not make the guy run, he did that by himself. When they catch him, he should rot in jail.

Hey Swd2k

I have a couple of comments for you. It was 2:15AM, how many people are out on the streets at that time? and if you don't like the way that the Pilot reports stories, then why don't you become a reporter, or better yet, not read the paper and post your comments. Most criminals, especially those that have already hit someone and are still out on the streets, need to be apprehended, so I say, "Good Job VBPD".

Pursuit protocol?

I wonder if this was a high-speed chase. Since it went through a neighborhood, I can only hope the VBPD, in their sometimes questionable wisdom, did not endanger other lives and property chasing this suspect. Could the officer not get the license number, make, model, color of the vehicle? Could the police not, with the hundreds of cops in cars at the oceanfront, cordon off the neighborhood and decrease the perimeter on this driver without forcing him into a crash that took a life? Who knows?

As is typical with Pilot reporting, many details of the story are either omitted or were not gathered for the story, so we're left to wonder what really happened. Granted, the driver should have stopped when the pedestrian was hit, but the way this pursuit was handled seems like it might have put even more at risk.
