Beach student's design chosen as regional winner in Google competition

A Virginia Beach student in the visual arts program at Old Donation Center is a regional winner in the Doodle 4 Google competition, according to a news release from the school system.

Hyland Slade has one of the best Google designs in the country, the release says. She won for the grades 4 to 6 category.

Online readers can go to the Google site and vote for Hyland’s to win the national award for best design until Sunday, the release says.

The competition asked kindergarten through 12th grade students in the U.S. to doodle a design using the theme “What if…?” according to the Google Web site. Forty finalists were chosen for the public to vote on.

The national winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship, a laptop computer and a T-shirt printed with the winning design. The winner’s school will receive a $25,000 grant toward the establishment of a computer lab or improvement of an existing lab.

The three national finalists will receive a trip to the Googleplex, a laptop computer and T-shirt printed with their design.

Each of the regional winners will receive a trip to the Googleplex and a shirt with their design.

All 360 state finalists will receive a certificate.
