Pedestrians should find the walking easier this summer at five busy intersections after the city installs countdown-type crossing signals.
The city expects to make safety improvements to the intersections by June, said Tammy Barry, a public works spokeswoman. The project is expected to cost $48,000, Barry said.
Each intersection will have an LED hand/man signal, with countdowns to let walkers know the amount of time they have to cross. Other improvements include pedestrian push buttons, thermoplastic crosswalk markings and “Turning Traffic Must Yield to Pedestrians’’ signs mounted on mast arms.
Improvements are slated for the following intersections: Battlefield Boulevard South and Cedar Road; Battlefield Boulevard South and Johnstown Road; Cedar Road and Country Club Boulevard; Battlefield Boulevard North and Gainsborough Square; and Battlefield Boulevard North and Medical Parkway.
Three other intersections are on the city’s to-do list, depending on the availability of funding.
Those intersections are: Etheridge Manor Boulevard and Hillwell Road; Battlefield Boulevard North and Roberts Hall Boulevard; and Battlefield Boulevard North and Campostella Road.
