A Chesapeake mother and daughter want their heart-shaped popcorn kernel to fetch some serious cash – and say they want part of the proceeds to go to Suffolk tornado victims.
Dubbed the Popcorn Kernal of Love, the pair have listed the heart-shaped tidbit, along with a picture, on eBay.
A note under the name of the listing on the site reads, “My heart POPS for you, but let’s not get corny.”
Amy Keller and her daughter started the bidding at $.50 for the kernel that recently was found in the bottom of a popped bag of Pop Secret butter popcorn, according to the description.
Thursday evening, the bid was at $12.50, according to the site. Interested bidders have until May 14, the site shows.
“It is way cool!,” Keller wrote in description at the bottom of the page. Her 13-year-old daughter, Arielle, found the kernel.
“She was very excited and I kind of ignored her enthusiasm ;) until I saw the kernel,” the mother wrote.
The site's note says the daughter wants to use the money to buy a special bed because she’s having trouble sleeping and also wants to donate some of the proceeds to the victims of last week’s tornado in Suffolk.
"We will probably donate it to the Red Cross or the Suffolk tornado fund," Arielle Keller said.
Her mother emphasized that the kernel is not for consumption.
A cereal flake that was listed earlier this year by two sisters in Chesapeake was pulled off eBay because of the site's rules about selling food items. Emily and Melissa McIntire listed the flake, shaped like Illinois, again under different criteria and sold it for $1,350 in March.

Re Ridiculous Kernel
I don't believe the listing is ridiculous at all.. At this point the bidding is over $50. I hope you get all you can out of this "mutant" kernel & your daughter gets her bed & a good night's sleep. And it's sweet of her to want to help the tornado victims. This kernel of corn has a destiny..
Just to clear up a few corny issues :)
Neither myself nor my daughter were ever on tv. This article information was taken from our ebay listing (with my permission) and one phone call. Besides, I'm camera shy.
Thank you for your close inspection of our kernel. It is one kernel and only one kernel. I promise. As soon as I lick the butter and salt from my fingers I can take an additional picture for you. :)
I guess this could be considered ridiculous, but you read it and took the time to respond. We actually think it's kind of fun, but maybe we're half popped. :)
We contacted both PT Barnum and Ripley but they were both unavailabe for comment. Apparently, they were both at a National Cornvention :)
Thanks to all of you who have been supportive and see the fun, light-heartedness and humor in this. Please know that this post is all in good fun with a smile on my face.
No Thanks
got any vine fruits that look like religous personalities?
Just another nonsense
Just another nonsense auction that the media fuels a demand for. People will do anything to be on TV!
A GOOD CAUSE
At least its going to a good cause, unlike the corn flake. It goes to show that there are some good people out there.
Some one will pay
In the words of P.T Barnum....."There's a fool born every minute"
This is starting to get
This is starting to get ridiculous.
Popcorn Kernel(s)
I clicked full view on the photo to examine this kernel. It appears to be 2 kernels, melded together in a 45 degree angle... a Siamese Twin popcorn kernel if you will. Maybe can add that aspect to the description on Ebay. PT Barnum used to buy into that kind of stuff.
