A satellite-based digital alert system will allow Hampton Roads localities to remain in contact with state emergency officials even if a storm or other disaster disabled telephone and Internet service, state officials said Thursday.
The Emergency Management Network also allows localities to send messages to local media in those circumstances. Expansion of the communications system to Hampton Roads and central Virginia was funded by the General Assembly last year.
State Police and the Virginia Emergency Operations Center first installed the network four years ago.
