Former Virginia governor Holton to speak at Norfolk book store

NORFOLK

Former Virginia governor Linwood Holton is scheduled to discuss his life in politics at Prince Books in Norfolk on June 17.

Holton, who served as governor from 1970 to 1974, has written a memoir called "Opportunity Time."

He was the first Republican governor elected in Virginia in over 100  years. He was known as a moderate, championing civil rights, school integration and busing as well as balancing development and environmental concerns. He has since supported Democratic candidates, including his son-in-law, Governer Timothy M. Kaine. 

A graduate of Washington & Lee University and Harvard Law School, Holton served on a Navy submarine during World War II. He served in publc life after his governership and currently works for a Richmond law firm.

Holton's talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at Prince Books at 109 E. Main Street, Norfolk.
