Genevieve Ross is a staff photographer for The Virginian-Pilot.

Genevieve has been a staff photographer for The Virginian-Pilot for six years. Since coming to the Pilot, she has been named the National Press Photographers Association Photographer of the Year in 2002 for our seven-state region. She has also won the Associated Press Photo of the Year in 2001 and the Virginia Press Association’s Best in Show Photo award also in 2001.

Genevieve was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minn., and after high school graduation she headed west. After two years at Arizona State University, she moved to California and transferred to California State University in Sacramento to study interior design. After taking a beginning photography course for an art requirement, she decided photography was her passion and future and switched majors and worked for the college newspaper, The State Hornet.

After graduating from CSUS with a B.A. in photography, she worked at The Auburn Journal in Auburn, Calif., for 1½ years. From there she worked for The Sacramento Bee Neighbors for 1½ years and then went on to The Marysville Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif., for two years.

For the past three years she has taught at the Truth With a Camera photojournalism workshop at The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk.
