Gates County has lost its fourth county manager in two years.
Paul Gregory Jr. resigned May 19 after four weeks on the job. Gregory, 61, became interim manager last month after his predecessor resigned to follow her husband to his new job in Wilmington.
Gregory is leaving for health reasons, said J.S. Pierce, chairman of the county Board of Commissioners.
"I think it was a little too much stress," he said. "He was a good person, very knowledgeable. We hated very bad when he gave us the news that he couldn't do it."
Gregory had recently retired after 17 years as county manager in Perquimans County. A month ago, he said he expected to hold the Gates position for a few months while county commissioners searched for a permanent manager. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Pierce said that since Gregory's resignation, the county has hired someone part time to help write the county's new budget, which will be implemented in July.
And for the fourth time since 2006, the commissioners will look for a manager for the county south of Suffolk.
"We've had a bad run, but it wasn't the fact that we ran them away or they intended to leave," Pierce said. "It was just circumstances."
