CHESAPEAKE

Alan Krasnoff, an 18-year veteran of the City Council running on a low-tax platform, was elected mayor Tuesday.

Krasnoff easily turned back fellow council member Rebecca Adams in a race that saw several other Republican-affiliated candidates earn seats on the council.

Krasnoff, who pulled in 12,541 votes to Adams' 10,880 votes, cast himself as the candidate who was most dedicated to lowering taxes.

Voter turnout in the mayor's race was about 18 percent.

Over the past year, Krasnoff clearly won favor with a fair-tax group angry after several years of rising property assessments that leveled off this year.

He also thanked more than 100 people gathered at a Republican celebration at Paradocks East Coast Grille.

"Oh my," Krasnoff said, after hugging and shaking hands with nearly everyone in his path. "I love you tonight."

Both Krasnoff and Adams said they hadn't planned to run until Mayor

Dalton Edge announced in January that he would not seek a second term.

Republican officials credit Krasnoff's victory to his energetic campaign.

He was "a pure ball of energy," said Chesapeake Republican Party Chairman Pete Burkhimer.

Some voters said they connected with Krasnoff's message of managed growth, lower taxes and serving the public.

Horticulturist Judy Ferguson said she chose him because of the personal connections he's forged with Chesapeake residents.

"He has, for the whole time he's been on council, done what the people have asked of him," Ferguson said.

Adams has been on the council since 2006. This was her second losing bid for mayor. The school principal fell to Edge by just 143 votes in 2004. She declined to comment late Tuesday.

The race involved candidates with two very different styles and voting records. At forums, the soft-spoken Adams gave measured and careful speeches. Krasnoff bounded from behind the lectern to be right in front of the audience, sometimes pausing to shake hands.

Adams, an independent who won an endorsement from the Chesapeake Democratic Party, voted last year for South Norfolk redevelopment projects such as Belharbour Station at SoNo and a massive proposed biodiesel plant.

Krasnoff voted against both projects, calling them bad deals.

He found himself in the minority on several key votes last year, including the vote to lower the real estate tax rate by five cents. Krasnoff wanted to drop the rate by 10 cents, winning him points with a group called the Chesapeake Citizens for Fair Real Estate Tax.

Both candidates' campaigns were heavily financed by individuals and businesses connected with real estate and development.

Krasnoff, who raised more money than Adams, spent at least $18,000 with a company that helped him conduct an aggressive direct-mail campaign. For one mailer, he used a 2004 school division directory to send targeted letters to school employees urging them to vote for him instead of Adams.

In another mailer, Krasnoff contended that Adams opposed a vote that could have led to tax relief for more senior citizens. "He tried to help," the mailer states. "She voted no."

Adams' supporters accused Krasnoff of conducting an unusually negative campaign by Chesapeake standards. Krasnoff denied that, saying he was just putting her record on display for voters.

Frog man....

Get a clue! You obviously know nothing about Krasnoff or his record. Don't post crap that you make up!

What does this have to do with it?

"I have owned my home for five years now in a nice neighborhood and would be lucky if I could walk away with twenty thousand dollars in profit today." Ummmm ok, but since most of us aren't buying a "home" for profit, who cares? Maybe you bought in the wrong place as well I'm guessing?

Krasnoff

It is a dark day for the City of Chesapeake having Krasnoff elected. It appears that Krasnoff intentionally votes (as a council member) to end all economic growth for the city by unconfirmed accounts of leaking all sensative information and pre-planning to his buddy Mike Saewitz at the pilot in the hopes of destroying and serving his own agenda(by the way, he has positioned himself on the planning teams to get info first). How can Krasnoff expect to lower taxes and (based on track record) shut the city down by closing the borders to new business and industry. We will be keeping our eye on this character... a very close eye.

The Frog

To jp1667:

And what's that supposed to mean? How about Larry Craig; Huey Long and a host of others who was caught up in their own incompetence and corruption? No research is needed: if Holly is corrupt or has done something in contravention of the law, he would have been or will be indicted. I resent the insinuation that is implied by your statement. You want to see incompetence? Try moving to Chesapeake.

You Run

Hey. All you folks who aren't happy with officials that were elected I have a suggestion. Next election cycle YOU run.

very sad...

Congrats Chesapeake on "change".

Holley in there again at 81 useless years old. No wonder Portsmouth remians behind the power curve and the obvious winner of cronyism in the Hampton Roads area.

What's even more shocking is once again apathetic citizens stayed home and didn't vote. Yet these same morons will be the first to complain when there's a problem, or the same old garbage continues on.

Research is not historical proof....

It's obvious that some folks don't want to research their history on corrupt US politicians like Mayor Marion Barry or House Rep W. Jefferon as references on race/gender politics.

Same could happen for any race in any region of the country but that's not the case in Portsmouth - too bad voter polls were not taken/shown to the public. That would give a more clearer picture of the issue.

disappointment

It's disappointment again in Chesapeake - really with everyone who was running - none were a standout to me

As i see it - none of them knows what it's like to be self employed and have to meet a payroll - all are paid by an employer and in some cases it's the City itself.

Same ole, same ole stuff

Avoid the rush!

Learn Chinese now. As a result of the over whelming level of apathy by the U.S. Citizen, we are ripe for the picking. just you wait and see.

LETS SEE!

Lets see how good his word is.............we voted you in..........now its time to change things...........

Anyone who says that a person can be elected based on his race..

Anyone who says that a person can be elected based on his/her gender or race is just ignorant (ill-informed or lacking knowledge) or just stupid(you purposely don't seek out the knowledge to educate yourself). Research the racial and gender composition of this country, or even local populations. A minority can't win based on minority votes because there are no where near enough minorities, even if they all vote, to determine the victors of an election. Also, gender is almost evenly split, so if all women are voting for a woman, that woman still won't win without males voting for her as well. Thus, it takes more than race and gender to win an election because others, who are not voting based on race or gender, must also vote for the same candidate. But most importantly, this country thrives on familiarity-Black, White, Asian, Native American alike all seek to sustain what they're most comfortable with. It's just dumb and naive to accuse one race of doing what all races engage in.

the circus is back in Ptown…

Out of the myriad of problems that Portsmouth has; I think the worst is apathy.
Apathy is what happened last night when a fraction of our population 12,000 out of + or – 57,000 voters hit the polls. As a result of this apathy; we now have the same cast of characters making the shady closed door deals that have been running this city into the ground for the last decade. I’m amazed that ALL cops, firefighters and teachers weren’t out there voting them out.. Wake up folks; you have all been living below the poverty line since these folks have been in office. Its funny how all these “hot button” issues like cop’s wages come up during reelection… Where were these people the rest of the time when you were trying to feed your family all along??? A mere forty percent of our children graduate from our school system, but WOW our Mayor has some pretty nifty suits. For the record; they build prisons based on the droput percentages not to mention the amount of people who go on welfare because they are functionally illiterate.

Chesapeake City Council

It is a sad day for Chesapeake. This is a city that will not change for the better as long as we have the same elected officials on City Council. Chesapeake will continue to move in the direction as our neighboring City of Portsmouth. The citizens of Portsmouth are close in nature but they have had to lower their standards because of poor leadership. I see Chesapeake on the brink of loosing any hope of becoming a great city to work and live in. Our homes are over-assessed, over-taxed and continue to loose their value. I have owned my home for five years now in a nice neighborhood and would be lucky if I could walk away with twenty thousand dollars in profit today. Our City Council should be running Chesapeake as if it were a business. If revenue decreases, for any reason, you must eliminate spending. Cost cutting should be perpetual priority. All departments should be challenged to cut cost by 7-10% per year and the resulting savings must be returned to the stockholders (taxpayers).

No wonder our City Council can not draw businesses to move to Chesapeake.

Ches not about party but people

I think this vote was rather clear that it is not about party lines but about those politicians who do the will of the people. This vote shows politicians you are accountable for your decisions and actions. Congrats to Krasnoff! I will be forever grateful to those council who rejected the ethanol plant. They show they care about the health and welfare of the citizens. I also congratulate Cliff Hayes. I also remember how he stood by the citizens and listened to us! Power to the people!!

"connections they forged with Chesapeake residents."

Lets hope that the newbie's remember that Western Branch is still part of the City of Chesapeake when it comes to $$$$ for parks, bike trails and controling new Real Estate sprawl.........

Might be a good thing

The city of Chesapeake just voted in a mayor who had a record of opposing tax increases, not caving to developers, and of reigning in gov. Sounds like a good thing. Why can't we do the same in Norfolk? Barclay Winn needs to go as does Daun and the rest of the posers.

Comes down to one thing!

Many people are just too stupid to be voting!!!! We need to get back to what the Constitution says about voting period!!

Amen to elections

Amen to dman3 - if all who did not vote - you helped to put back folks that can not do the job for Portsmouth - So just sit back and take your medicine and enjoy it because it promises only to get worse - we will continue to put a band-aid on our problems while new ones are created by the same old people - I can only hope that some of these new people try and make a difference - please don't slip into these old patterns. It will take real backbone!

Ms. Creecy don't give up - you would have made a GREAT Mayor and almost did.

So much for expanding your horizons Portsmouth

Yawn....business as usual in P-Town. At least the PD has an opportunity for real change. But how much will really change when the folks holding the money have their own twisted agendas?

Unionman...

you know that's gotta be the reason Portsmouth's got Holley again as mayor.

Once Again

"The secret is to educate the masses."

Demographics

Unionman...I agree, no surprise in Portsmouth. African-Americans make up 50% of the city's popuplation (largest percentage in the area)according to census/demographic results.

Incompetence

So I guess people voted for George Bush for 7 years and Hillary Clinton in Indiana because they're white? Because both are incompetent. Bush would not have won if it wasn't for the white vote. Hillary stayed in the race so long because of the white vote.
Makes sense doesn't it?

Chesapeake Elections for City Council

imagine that.........

More of the same to come. Some of these people will vote in the presidential election the next president will be determined by party line voters, race and or gender voters and one issue voters. How sad!

I don't know what the heck happened......

all the grumbling, moaning and groaning and the same idiots got voted back onto council in Chesapeake. Apparently Chesapeake homeowners lack backbone. *I* didn't vote for ANY incumbent except for Krasnoff. *I* wanted change and look what I get! Incompetence voted back in by incompetents. I think they fooled a lot of voters by sticking these losers on a 'republican'ticket. The blindness is unreal.

dman - simple

dman - it's simple... race. Voting is flawed. So many people vote by party, or by looks, or by race. That's why I chuckle when I get hit with all the emails saying "no matter who you vote for, VOTE!" An email was circulating around Norfolk pushing real hard for the Barclay Winn person. It referenced a Virginia Pilot editorial, and purposely left off all the people going against him. I don't keep up with Norfolk politics, although I used to pay attention to Virginia Beach a bit. In the end though, the voting thing is kind of funny, especially on a national level. I guess people tell themselves they somehow make a change.

Marion Barry for Mayor....

It's obvious people did vote this election but some local politicians have their "ways" of finding enough votes to keep holding onto their comfy positions while homeowners are suffering.

I just wonder how much $$$ in bus fare, lotto tickets, booze and cigarettes it cost to win some of these elections...

seriously portsmouth?

i live in portsmouth, i did not vote for holley. i seriously don't understand why people continue to re-elect him. he's proven to be a poor mayor and all i hear about is people complaining about how bad he is, but hey lets go ahead and elect him again! are these people just too lazy to go vote? it's very sad.

Hush

If you did not vote in the local elections then hush. You had your chance.
