Location changed for Portsmouth law enforcement memorial service

Posted to: News Portsmouth

The threat of storms tonight has prompted city officials to change the location of the Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

The new location will be St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, 2714 Frederick Blvd., according to a police news release. The service begins at 2 p.m.

The event begins efforts this week and next week to honor fallen law enforcement officers. Next week, law enforcement officers nationwide will observe National Police Week.

Suffolk plans to honor its fallen officers Friday at 9 a.m. in City Council chambers, according to Lt. Debbie George, police spokeswoman.

Other Hampton Roads cities are planning services for Monday as follows:

• Chesapeake will hold a service at 11 a.m. in front of Police Headquarters, 304 Albemarle Drive. If it rains, the alternate location will be City Council chambers.

• Norfolk will hold its service at 10 a.m. in the courtyard at City Hall, 810 Union St.

• Hampton will hold its service at 10 a.m. at Honor Park, between City Hall and the Public Safety Building in downtown Hampton.

• Newport News will hold its service at 10 a.m. in front of City Hall, 2400 Washington Ave.

• Virginia Beach will hold its service at 11 a.m. in front of Police Headquarters, 2509 Princess Anne Road.
