Suffolk firefighters and Norfolk Lake Patrol officers rescued a man whose boat sank Sunday afternoon in Suffolk.
Witnesses saw a boat sinking about noon and saw a person holding on to the side of the boat in the water near Girl Scout Road and Lake Prince Drive, according to a release from Suffolk Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they found the man clinging to the boat in the water, about 150 yards from the road, the release says.
They saw the man let go of the boat and grab the branch of a tree as they approached him, the release says. When they were within 50 feet of the man, he let go of the branch and went under water.
Firefighters pulled the man out of the water and transferred to a Norfolk Lake Patrol boat, the release says. He was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition Sunday.
The water was about 5 feet deep, the release says. The man was alone on the boat.

Life Preservers
So many people die each year just by not putting on a life preserver. It is such a simple thing. Bulky yes, but then, what is your life worth?
PFD
I think Va law requires having a life vest or at least a (PFD) personal floatation device for each adult on the boat, & if I am not mistaken children have to be wearing one at all times. Maybe short people who can't swim should be required to wear one as well for their forays into such deep water excursions.
Re: 5 ft of water?
To be fair, he'd have to be at least 5'8" tall in order to touch bottom and simultaneously breathe.
Great thinking!
Sunday afternoon was a wonderful day to go boating.
5 feet?
Thats what I was thinking. Was he a non swimming midget?
5 ft of water?
Come on now. 5 ft of water?? Hope the cavebilly is alright after that..
