Maria Carrillo is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the newsroom.
Carrillo has been managing editor since 2005. Before that, she was deputy managing editor for enterprise, directing many projects over the years. They included "When the Rain Came,” about the ravages of Hurricane Camille; “Dead or Alive?” the story of a missing Gulf War pilot; “A Cosmic Tale,” about the meteor strike that hit Hampton Roads 35 million years ago; and "The Fever," a 14-part serial narrative about the plague of 1855.
Carrillo came to The Pilot in 1998. She was previously an editor at The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg and began her journalism career as a reporter. She is a 1985 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Carrillo was born in Washington, D.C., two years after her parents fled their native Cuba. She now lives in Norfolk with her husband and two children.
