NORFOLK

The School Board on Wednesday accepted the retirement of Michael J. Caprio, the principal of Maury High School and a longtime educator in the Norfolk school system.

The school division has already begun a search for his replacement.

Caprio, 63, presided over Maury for five years. In the past year, some of his decisions - denying a request for a study hall class and trying to sell the band's seats at a home football game - drew public protests from parents.

His career in Norfolk Public Schools has spanned four decades, with a brief break to help establish St. John the Apostle Catholic School in Virginia Beach.

As Granby High School's principal for nearly eight years, Caprio began the International Baccalaureate program for top scholars, managed a $28 million renovation and divided the students into smaller groups to promote learning - a philosophy now practiced in all of the city's high schools.

Earlier in his career, Caprio was the principal at three elementary schools and Blair Middle School and worked as the school division's first male kindergarten teacher.
