VIRGINIA BEACH
The sandstorm between the Beaches is apparently just fine with Myrtle Beach.
Tourism officials there defended a marketing campaign Thursday that disses Virginia Beach.
In fact, the ads have run sporadically for two years and also name Daytona Beach and Gatlinburg, Tenn.
"Frankly, my top priorities right now are filling hotel rooms," Brad Dean, head of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, told The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News. "It's pure guerilla marketing, and some take issue with that."
"Some" includes Virginia Beach tourism gurus.
They noticed an official Myrtle Beach chamber Web page recently that called the resort "The Ideal Alternative to Virginia Beach Vacations." The ad touted more relaxation or thrills - depending on one's tastes - and better prices.
Jim Ricketts, head of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, wrote a letter castigating his counterparts and asking that the ad be pulled.
Hasn't happened yet.
"All's fair in love and war," Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes told The Sun News. "I personally think Virginia Beach is making a mountain of a molehill, and the more disgruntled they become the more publicity they give Myrtle Beach."

Re MMM
I was also amused. Stevenc..Please don't take it the wrong way. I liked the comment, & got a good laugh. Thanks from me too.
Let them have the beach title!
Virginia Beach has more to offer than just the beach! MB is just a glorified beach and nothing more than a tourist attraction. Virginia Beach should counter their ads with ones proclaiming that "MB is the place where tourists visit but VB is the place where tourists live"! There are a few up here that can't be pleased regardless of what the city does but for the rest of us, VB is part of a greater, more dynamic region than MB will ever be. Perhaps some of the disgruntled VB residents could move there if they don't like the idea of living in a REAL city!
stevenc
Now that's a funny comment! Thanks!
Mmm
Interesting title. Did anyone see the headline in the Myrtle Beach Paper today.
"Myrtle Beach Threatens Capping Virginia Beach's Punk Ass in Dispute Over Tourism Ads."
Slang Can...& Does Evolve Into English Language
"Yan·kee
–noun 1. a native or inhabitant of the United States."...2. 3. 4. Northern regions etc etc..
This is just 1 example..Words that were once used as slang have evolved into what is commonly spoken even today in America. After all, many were "invented" by the "English". There must be hundreds...or more.. in nautical terms & phrases alone. One of the first written uses of this word to refer to an American can be found in a letter to Lord Nelson.
There are more definitions of this word, but, there is one from this source that was omitted. Although first used with contempt...It is the proud name of one of the US's most successful baseball teams.

Don't Like Either
Myrtle Beach is as bad as VB. They both hassle everyone to bleed them dry of their funds. Only time I go to the Oceanfront is when company comes into town. Glad that isn't too often. The Oceanfront use to be lots of fun to be had bad all. You could play ball games and whatever you wanted to. Now they have DO's and DON'Ts with more DON'Ts than do's. Both are very commericalized, but as many as said about the oceanfront, that after the sun goes down there is NOTHING TO DO. Remember when Dolly Parton was tyring to bring in an entertainment facility, which the city shot down. Now the city wants to put some large amusement complex in which is what Dolly was going to do. Yes, MB has lots of other things to do, but once again it is as bad as VB. Even the Outer Banks where I loved to go for a week at a time is now getting like VB. All they are doing is building places to sell tourist items. I seen the change there in 20 years and it is now another VB.
Myrtle Beach Is Just Telling The Truth
I've lived in Virginia Beach since '91 and the more power they gave the Christian Right, the less of a nice place to visit the beach has became. Between the constant censorship, the zero tolerance the beach police have for nice cars and the constant deafening roar of the jets from Oceana, it's a wonder anyone comes here to vacation in the first place. That's ok with me - the sooner the tourists go home, the better.
Come on, People!
Aren't you getting just a little out of hand with "dissing" the Pilot and its use of a commonly used word? If you read blogs on other subjects regarding the Beach, many seem upset by the rules and regulations governing behavior, saying Va. Beach is way too conservative for anyone to enjoy. Then the local paper makes an attempt to lighten things up a bit with common vernacular and you would think they misspelled the President's name or something, heaven forbid!

Seriously, I thought this was an article on hip hop with that title.
"Heyyyy....Myrtle Beach"? Good job. Can I donate a slogan to all of you?
The east coast jewel,is very bright with you here- Come to Myrtle Beach, we speak and write the english that made America famous".
Thanks for the comedy Pilot!
Virginia Beach cannot handle the truth
I have vactioned in both Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach. The add is right on. Myrtle has so much more to offer EVERYONE, from families to guys going on a golfing weekend. They have shows such as Dixie Stampede and Alabama. They have 100's of golf an putting courses. Most of the hotels have indoor, outdoor AND floating pools. MOST of all they are friendly to people and the police do not look for reason to hassle tourists.

The truth hurts. VB should send city officials to Myrtle Beach to learn from them how to make a city a success. VB is not close to the city Myrtle Beach is. People have to accept that VB is just a second rate town!"
Obviously you are not a long time Virginia Beach resident and have no clue as to what you are talking about. The VB Mayor has been traveling to MB for years trying to structure our city similar to theirs. Why do you think its so screwed up at the oceanfront now? I will agree with you that the city needs change within the council.
Why diss "diss"?
The Pilot is just getting jiggy wit it. Know-whuddIamsayin', yo?
If the Pilot wants to know why readership is down- the answer is simple. It no longer writes to and for the people who are literate and are most likely to buy and read the paper. They are now writing for the semi-literate who will most likely never buy a paper. They are actively disenfranchising anyone with a half a brain in order to recruit a less than literate readership.
Kudos.
I honestly hope our leaders
I honestly hope our leaders here in VA beach don't think we compare to Myrtle Beach, they are worlds apart and much better than us as far as things to do and fun times. The only thing we have over them is the boardwalk and that is not sufficient enough to say we are better. I always direct my friends and family to Myrtle Beach instead of here and will continue to do so as long as we do not bring in more entertainment like Midevel Times, Dixie Stampede, etc. Sure the so called Aquarium and Wild Water Rapids are OK at best, but we are leap years behind Myrtle.
If this is war...
...then here's one way to retaliate. Just go to Google, search on "Virginia Beach," the click on the stupid ad by Myrtle Beach -- over and over and over. Then Myrtle Beach CVB gets stuck with a fatter bill because of click-throughs.
**When I checked just now by searching on "Virginia Beach," I'm no longer seeing this ad in Google's rotation. Maybe they've moved on to picking on Gulf Shores or Pearl River...
Va Beach
Well if Va Beach is so bad why dont we just set up drilling platforms out there and start getting some of that natural gas then.
Dissing...
The pilot is just as bad as VB. VB makes "a mountain out of a mole hill" by reacting so adamantly to the MB ad. The pilot shows lack of professionalism by using the word "Dissing". Watch out pilot readers, you will be seeing all the text messages shorts cuts soon enough. LOL. VB - give it up. Counter with your own "disrectful" ad. I always love the Beach news and reports by the pilot for humor. IT is no BFD and we will see more about this I am sure ADN. People reading this outside this local get a big BL and will BWL. L8R
VA BEACH...MYRTLE BEACH...VA BEACH...MYRTLE BEAC
Like a car accident. You really don't want to see the details, but you can't pull yourself to look away from the drama. Then you discover...twas only a fender bender...nothing of significance and you've wasted your time.
Dissing VB
VB is certainly not getting their "props". lol
Love it...
I just came from Myrtle Beach. Wonderful Resort City and I know a few people that would rather spend their money in SC then VB.
Dissing????
I think I would get fired if I used that word to a customer or the public. Unless, of course, it is a ploy to revive Greekfest...
long live OBX
long live OBX
Who cares?
Both of them suck as far as resort areas. It's either California or Florida for a nice beach resort. All we have running around the beach is rednecks, dopey loudmouth teenagers, and drunken squids on leave. Oh yea, we have a ton of noise pollution from Ocean though. That's a big seller!
If you like this one, check out the "assault for hire" story.
There are many words in the Dictionary. Does that make them proper in every context. I think not. The Pilot is becoming a bit Low Brow.
ebonics
dis? hey, I'm axing you a question?
DISSING IS US SLANG FOR DISRESPECT
DISS IS A VARIATION OF DIS. DIS is US slang for putting a person down;to bad mouth. Noun: disrespect. [abbreviation for disrespect]- Oxford Dictionary
Dissing is in the dictionary
Dissing is in the dictionary. I'll admit, when they did the article about the radio tower "felled," I looked it up :-) Regarding Virginia Beach, it is what it is. I emailed the Virginia Beach tourism office (the guy quoted in this article even) a few months ago. I came up with a neat technology about 4 years ago that could be used to aid the local tourism industry, and I never got any response from the locals. Maybe I should email the tourism people at Myrtle Beach!
DISSING=LOW CULTURE DIALOGUE PERPETUITY
Why is the Virginian Pilot using the low culture/urban dreg terminology of 'dissing" in this story? For all those with brains,"dissing" is the low culture abbreviation for disrespect.
The Pilot Staff and their lack of grammatical skills have been influenced by the pathetic, worthless, incoherant, and pop culture crazed elements in our society.
Why should they pull the ad?
It wasn't "dissing" it was simply comparing Chevy to Ford or in this case a '75 Chevy Nova with a BMW 535xi.
NEED COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF CITY OFFICIALS!
The truth hurts. VB should send city officials to Myrtle Beach to learn from them how to make a city a success. VB is not close to the city Myrtle Beach is. People have to accept that VB is just a second rate town!
Dissing?
Makes me wonder if Journalism students are required to study the English Language. I suppose some folks just want to appear "Hip".
