Navy plans low flights over Virginia, North Carolina sites

Posted to: Military North Carolina

CAMDEN

The Navy plans low jet flights over five sites, three in Virginia and two in North Carolina, to demonstrate noise levels at outlying landing fields.

Test runs would occur within the next year and will be advertised, said Navy spokesman Ted Brown.

Jets would fly about 600 feet above ground in a race track shaped pattern typical of “touch and go” carrier landing drills without touching down, Brown said.

The tests are intended to demonstrate that landing practice will not be as intrusive as expected, but opponents of an outlying landing field used similar tests conducted in 2005 as a rallying point when flights didn’t go as expected.

Camden and Gates counties in North Carolina and Sussex, Southampton and Prince George counties in Virginia were selected in January as proposed sites for an outlying landing field.

Residents and officials at each site have overwhelmingly opposed a Navy airfield near their homes largely because of noise. The Navy held meetings at each of the sites in the last two weeks to explain flight patterns, location and frequency of flights among other things.

In 2005, the Navy conducted a test run for the public at a site in Washington County where observers said a jet pilot narrowly missed a flock of geese. The Navy disputed the claim. A test scheduled for Hyde County near Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge was scrapped after flocks of birds were seen flying in the testing area and it was deemed too dangerous.

The ones in VB that want to

The ones in VB that want to push the OLF on the rural people are "Newcomers", yes that is right "Newcomers". Most of the properties that the Navy wants to take in the rural areas have been in the same family 100 years or more. Our property has been in the family for over 150 years and is as a Century Farm. Century Farms are farms still being farmed by direct descendants of the original owner for 100 years or more. Yes, it does upset us when we hear the "Newcomers" call us unpatriotic, selfish and so on. The ones that are unpatriotic and selfish, are the ones that built up around the base after it was there.
Why don't you "newcomers" think of the security of this nation, instead of staying where you are causing our military hardships, why don't you move?

For my "ego"

"You weren't the only one to whom I was directing my comments. As someone typing this from Iraq during his fifth trip over here, my heart bleeds for any of you who have to put up with a little noise."

cs, perhaps you could explain to the readers how the Iraqis complained about the effects of the rumbling jets on their mosques and you all had to change you flight patterns and heights? Was it the same "little noise" you were describing that they felt was being purposely used to damage their older buildings.

"Let me be clear, so Ira's ego doesn't assume I am talking only about him. ANYONE who moved anywhere near Oceana since 1943 needs to have a nice big cup of shut the heck up."

cs, your reading is still failing. I do not live in the same state as Oceana or Fentress. The article is about flights in NC and other parts of Virginia. I thin you may be on the wrong board. More Likely you just didn't read the article and provided us w/ your biased knee jerk reaction.

wah

If you moved there in 1998 you got what you deserved.

cs I am not going to shut up

I moved to vb in 1998. At that time I checked in on the noise levels. The Navy LIED, the city LIED. Just because you are a lifer in IRAQ dosnt count for much if you are saying it is ok for the NAVY to lie. PS: some of us complainers got shot at in Vietnam and other places thus have a right to complain.

it's not all about you, ira

You weren't the only one to whom I was directing my comments. As someone typing this from Iraq during his fifth trip over here, my heart bleeds for any of you who have to put up with a little noise. Some of you don't deserve the military that protects you, so unwilling are you to sacrifice anything for your own security. Let me be clear, so Ira's ego doesn't assume I am talking only about him. ANYONE who moved anywhere near Oceana since 1943 needs to have a nice big cup of shut the heck up.

Response

"Get out the big bowls because ignornace is going to be served out "super-sized" on this topic. "

I would say my facts are in line. From emperical evidence to court filings. What did you need to know?

"cs" apparently cannot read very well. Did anyone else get that I no longer live there?

"little noise"...so that's what you call a DB level over 117? Oh, was I supposed to use the daily average and not the actual level of the flights?

Yes, they have been flying more in NE NC and I do not believe it is at random. This is leading to something. For the Navy, take this as notice, if the flights increase over our homes, I will spearhead a class action lawsuit for the people.

"figures dont lie, but liars figure"

These over flights are an attempt by the Navy to downplay the actual noise issue. If the residents dont complain they will they publish that The "residents werent bothered by the flights." What the tests do not show is the VERY loud noise the jets make on touchdown. (The Navy practice is to go to full power on touchdown in case the wire is missed." Gliding around in a race track ill produce very little noise. It is truly sad that the Navy said it was going to be "more open" and "honest" this time, then game the system with the "rigged" test. If they want to do it right they should come down to 50 ft on one leg of the race track, then got to full power untill they reach their 600 ft. And the residents should be "on site" to monitor the test for themselve.
Also complain anytime the noise is to loud.

quit whining

Oceana Naval Air Station was built in 1943. It became a master jet base in the 1950s. If you bought your property "3 miles from the runways" since that time, you have zero right to complain. If you bought it before then, you've had 65 years to figure out it's loud near airfields.

Please don't blame us in the

Please don't blame us in the rural areas of Virginia. Virginia Beach gets the plus side, even from the State. It is all political, Virginia Beach area has more voters than we do, so, we in the rural area get stepped on time after time. Put the blame where it belongs, on Virginia Beach, they are the one that built up the Oceana area, they are the ones that didn't abide by what the Navy told them. The Navy is also to blame for not making Virginia Beach condemn the areas.

No OLF

Don't you just love how the people who it will not effect, or the ones that want rid of the noise, just LOVE to criticize those of us in NC that don't want the OLF. VA, you created the problem, you keep it! I moved from VA to NC to have peace and quiet, not to have it follow me. And Ira you are correct, they have been flying over in KI quite a bit the past few months, funny how this was never any type of flight path before.
