CHESAPEAKE

Two new judges are scheduled to be sworn in today to fill posts in Chesapeake Circuit Court.

Chesapeake defense attorney John Brown is set to be sworn in at the courthouse at 1 p.m. Norfolk Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Marjorie Arrington is to be sworn in at 4 p.m., according to court officials.

Brown and Arrington were appointed last month by the General Assembly. They will fill the posts of S. Bernard Goodwyn and Frederick H. Creekmore. Goodwyn was appointed to the Virginia Supreme Court, and Creekmore retired.

Chesapeake needs better

From what I’ve read of John Brown, I believe he’ll make an excellent judge. I’m worried though about Marjorie Arrington. Former prosecutors often make terrible judges. They’re trained to get a conviction regardless of guilt and when they become judges, they’re often guilty of “prosecuting” from the bench. The Chuck Griffith debacle should have taught the GA to avoid selecting CA’s. Now we hear that Chesapeake’s most recently appointed judge—Randall Smith—is the CA responsible for the wrongful conviction of Richard Shelton. Maybe we can replace him, too.
