Oil and water at the shore

In 'Off on offshore drilling,' (letter, May 24), the writer contends that Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf testified before Congress against offshore drilling. I guess our mayor is worried that vacationers won't want to come here and see all those ugly oil wells. She need not worry. In a few more years, nobody will be able to afford to come here and see them because of rising gas prices.

I think most people would think the wells were a beautiful sight. They would mean a step toward oil independence. I wish the mayor would explain her objections.

Translation of gripes

Waaaahh! I can't afford the gas in my SUV to run down bicylist on the road! WAAAh! DRILL! No one will buy my truck! Waaah!

LOL

Cant' Be AM..

It has to be the liberal commie tree huggers stopping the off shore drilling. Let's not muddy the waters with the Navy's input we have an idealogy to uphold. LOL

What people do not remember

is that the Navy does not want offshore drilling in this area as it would hamper trainings and mobility. The USN is on record opposing offshore drilling in VA. And correct me if I'm wrong, the drilling which would occur off the VA coast would be for natural gas, not oil. So how would it benefit our oil independence again?

No Big Deal Here...

I am in agreement with most here and off shore drilling seems to me to be of no big issue. I am like some who marvel at the sight of those structures. In some areas down south you see big power line towers stretching across beautiful lakes and rivers and I think a few oil rigs well off shore would be less of an impedement to ones view. Just my thoughts.

Not to worry

The longer we put off drilling off our own coast the more time the Chinese have to put in more drilling off our coasts.

Just think, in a few short years we'll not be buying oil from OPEC, but from the Communist Chinese.........

START DRILLING NOW

Sounds Familiar

The good Mayor sounds like Senator Ted Kennedy and Walter Cronkite who did not want offshore electrical power windmills to spoil the view in front of their ocean front mansions. Perhaps she doesn't feel or hear the cries of pain at the gas pump just yet.

I don't know if they are beautiful

But the fishing around offshore oil rigs is great. I would expect the improvement in the fishing they would bring, especially if they were close enough to shore to reach with medium sized boats, would draw far more tourists than seeing them could ever drive away.
