U.S. 17 in Suffolk reopened after resident hit gas line

SUFFOLK

All lanes of U.S. 17 have been reopened this afternoon after a ruptured natural gas line forced lanes closures this morning.

The closure was in the 3600 block, said Lt. Debbie George, a police spokeswoman. Additionally, Walden Road between the highway and Cook Road also was closed.

"A citizen doing yard work damaged a gas line," George said.

The area is about two miles west of the interchange of U.S. 17 and Interstate 664 and Va. 164.

In Virginia, anyone performing excavation work on their property is urged to call "Miss Utility" before they dig.

It is a free service, available 24 hours daily, at (800) 552-7001 

Utilities with facilities in the area of any planned digging will respond within 48 hours, beginning at 7 a.m., the next business day to locate an pipes or lines that may be in the area.

Excavation can begin after the caller has verified that all utilities have either marked their lines or determined that their are no facilities in the area of the planned dig.
