The driver of one of two vehicles that collided Wednesday night in the 3100 block of E. Princess Anne Road died shortly after being taken to a hospital, police said.

Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman, said the wreck occurred about 9 p.m. when a Saturn attempted to turn onto Princess Anne Road from Cromwell Road.

It was struck on the driver's side by a Dodge pickup that had been westbound on Princess Anne, Amos said.

There were two women in the Saturn, one of whom was trapped for a time in the wreckage and had to be extricated by rescue personnel from Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Both women were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where one woman later died, Amos said.

The names of those involved were not immediately released.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, Amos said.
