PETA calls for reforms after Derby horse euthanized on track

Peta thinks it is wrong to euthanize an injured horse, but it is ok for them to kill dogs in the back of a van in North Carolina and dump the carcasses in a dumpster?

I can't believe that I'm about to type and I know that I will probably feel physical pain for this but here it goes...

I have to agree with peta on this one (oops, there goes my spleen). Rules, Regulations, and Policies need to change to ensure that this event NEVER happens again.

So a horse got euthanized-what's PeTA so upset about? Are they angry becasue THEY didn't get to do the deed?

They offed 2981 animal in 2006 and many of those didn't have any injuries and were perfectly healthy.

Maybe PeTA would be happier if they were the designated death squad of horse racing? They could, for a fee, euthanize every losing horse and give their speaches to an emptying grandstand.....

Horses are often treated badly in racing, and it is wrong. I am not against horse racing, but it should be held to higher standards. Drugs, young horses being raced to soon, and abuse to horses who don't meet performance expectations are all wrong.
As for my new group PETC, I would like to share a system of abuse that is not reported on. Everyday poor carrots are decapitated, skinned alive, and cooked alive. Rampant industry incidents of abuse have gone up dramatically since the onslaught of vegan diets. Please consider eating more proteins and less carrots. Are not all organic based life forms entitled to some sort of protection? Unlike PETA, we will dump no carrot carcasses in NC dumpsters.
Oh, get over it! It's just humor, because I actually just put six carrots in the juicer to wash down the bacon and eggs I ate. I don't like PETA so much, but they are right in expecting to hold people to higher standards; maybe not their standards but higher then they are now. Animal abusers are usually people abusers.

Larry King did a great segment last year with Bo Derek representing the racing industry and basically agreeing with everything PeTA presented. Here we are a year later and back in the same place with no changes made.

Its all a matter of overbreeding animals to be fast and not durable. Its irresponsible.

For grins, I looked up the real estate assessment for peta's headquarters at 501 Front Street. Guess what - it rose a total of 20% for the four year period between 2003 to 2007. No, not 20% per year, 20% in total. If they're paying, it's certainly not tracking with residential values.

As a former thoroughbred owner, I have learned many things about horses. I am always interested in learning more about them and today I was informed that horses under 5, especially fillies are slow to complete the growth in their leg tendons and bones. There definatly needs to be reform in thoroughbred racing. I will be the first to say I enjoy watching races and participating in impromptu ones myself but I can not condone racing underdeveloped animals. It's cruel and is nothing but a lose-lose situation. How beautiful of a horse to waste for the sake of a dollar!

PETA is on target with their message on this and I fully support their efforts to reform a sometimes disgusting way to win. Her story is tragic but I am glad that they decided to euthanize her instead of trying to prolong her suffering like how Barbaro's case was handled. Here's to you, Eight Belles!

Horse racing is a stupid past time anyways. I do not really see the difference between that and dog fighting. In the end, both animals end up either hurt or dead.

...Peta would like putting the horse through more pain and suffering that it can stand, by moving the horse off the track before it is euthanized.
Or would they rather hear the horse in total agony over the pain it is experiencing as they move it somewhere else? They probably would, they have no respect for someone's dog (pitching it in a dumpster in NC)

Though, I don't agree with PETA's idea of euthanizing dogs and cats and tossing them into NC dumpsters, I would say that PETA is right on regarding racing. As a horse owner, I agree that racing two and 3-year old fillies and colts is irresponsible. The horse is not even mature until it reaches 5. At the age of 3, they should just be starting on a training regimen to prepare them for racing, not put them into a full-fledged, hell-bent-for leather racing program.

The People at PETA are insane. They may have started out with good intentions but they have gotten so crazy over the years with their antics and publicity stunts and outrageous demands that no one takes them seriously any more. They are viewed as a bunch of fanatics with no real purpose other than to harrass anyone who isn't a vegan tree hugger.

This organization reminds me of "ambulance chasers" looking for publicity and a new agenda. How can they think people are dumb enough to believe everything they say. You can check things out for yourself, I did and

We all need to bow to PETA, send them money, give them support! They need it! Those poor souls are sitting in a Waterside building with window views of the Elizabeth River, playing solitaire on their computer until the next horse race

I once approached that building with an injured cat, they turned me away. I shot the cat to put out of misery and left on their doorstep. I was furious!

This morning I saw the story on Headline News. I felt kind of sorry for the horse, but now that I see that PETA has their grubby paws in the pot trying to cash in on the publicity, I don't feel quite as bad. Maybe they should have just thrown the horse into a dumpster behind the Wal-Mart there. Isn't that what PETA would have done? Get over it PETA.. It was just an animal!!

The problem with your (and PETA's) line of reasoning is they want to make animals equal to humans as far as rights. That reasoning isn't only ridiculous, it's insane. I hate to break it to you, animals are inferior to [most] humans, and therefore we use them as food, labor and entertainment.

Furthermore, I challenge anyone to prove anything [constructive] PETA has done that has helped animals. PETA does less to help animals and more to promote PETA, pretty pathetic.

Whenever you have animals that are used for our food or pleasure you are bound to have mistreatment. Man doesnt even respect man so what makes you think that he will respect an animal. Peta is fighting a noble cause that they will never win. Dog Fighting, Horse Racing, Dog Racing, Cock Fights, The Circus, Petting Farms, Zoo's, and so on and so on....They are all evidence of mans lack of respect for animals!! Mother Nature will balance it all out in the end so be careful what you SOW!!!!!

You all cry about PETA, but I haven't heard anyone cry for the horse? In PETA's defense the animals in the dumpster were animals brought to them by irresponsible owners. It's not PETA's fault people overbreed pets then abandon them. The horse broke both ankles? Can that not be fixed? If it were fixed I'm sure the horse would be no value for gambling though, so it's more economical to ghost it.

I read last week that interest and TV viewership is way down for horse racing. Good. Maybe lack of interest will finally put an end to this so-called sport that treats horses as disposable. I hope public opinion turns against it in a big way, for the sake of the horses.

How arrogant. There was a time when I believed in their cause. They have proven themselves to be just another fanatical, hypocritical (need I remind anyone of the NC debacle), and pontificating group of zealots. My support and money now goes to the SPCA - a group that devotes itself to the care of all animals.

PETA really needs to get over themselves and stay away from something they really don't know anything about...If they had watched the race, which I am sure they did not. They would have known that no matter what the jockey would have done, there was nothing to do to save the horse. Even the track vet that was there was saying it was a freak accident that caused this horse to go down. It happens. Trust me, as someone from Kentucky and who grew up all of 2 miles from Churchill Downs, it was very upsetting to see them have to put the horse down on the track. I even cried when they put Barbaro down. It something that happens. Please leave that poor jockey alone. He had nothing to do with it. He will have to live with that sound of her bones breaking for the rest of his life. Let him be and let him try to go about his career.

Of course PETA has to call for reform. It's the rules. When they're not killing dogs they have to mind someone's business........right?

How about declaring PETA the terrorist organization that they are. They contribute to the group of thugs sworn to stop everything: they're on the FBI and other terrorist lists. Why shouldn't PETA be there?
