PORTSMOUTH
City leaders assured Cradock residents Tuesday night that they have no intention of closing their library, and City Manager Kenneth Chandler said the rumor that the library might be closing is not true.
Cradock community leader Ted Lamb told the council he had wanted to make them aware that the idea had been discussed at the department level. Councilman Ray Smith said the prospect was discussed as one of many options when each city department was asked to reduce expenses by 5 percent.
But, he said, the idea went no further.
Portsmouth's budget that was adopted Tuesday night includes a $100,000 expense reduction in the city's library system.
