City police went to the neighborhood of a slain teen again on Wednesday to look for new clues in her death.

Meghan Landowski, 16, was found dead April 10 in her home on Roberts Court West in Portsmouth's Simons-dale area.

The killing remains unsolved.

Detectives went back to the area to put "a fresh set of eyes" on the neighborhood and make sure they hadn't missed anything, said Detective Jan Westerbeck of the Portsmouth police. It was not the first time investigators had been back in the area following Meghan's death.

"They were knocking on some doors of people that weren't there the last time they went," Westerbeck said. "They were also looking in storm drains for additional evidence."

Police have not released the cause of death, saying it could hamper their investigation, Westerbeck said.

"We are not releasing that, because it's important to maintain that information," she said, "because only the suspect and victim knew that."

Landowski was a sophomore at Woodrow Wilson High School. Her death shocked her friends, who called her a sweet girl who always made others happy.

Psychics have called the Police Department offering theories, Westerbeck said, which is routine in high-profile cases.

Police are urging neighbors to remain vigilant, and they are continuing to ask for tips from the public.

"Somebody out there knows what happened," Westerbeck said. "And we encourage them to call either Crime Line or call the investigators."

The Crime Line is 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. (562-5887)

Fergus.....

Just because your friends murder hasn't been solved, does not make the detectives and officers working the case "the worst." There are unsolved cases all over the country that can not be solved by competent officers. Not all cops are idiots, not all cops are dishonest and not all cops are just out to get you. One bad experience and people believe the whole force is bad. Give these men and women a break, regardless of what city they are in. If you were in trouble, I have no doubt that everyone would 911 for their help. I hope that the PPD is able to move the investigation in the right direction and find the person who committed this crime. So what if they don't release the cause of death. It could be a piece of information that gets them the murderer. It is not our right to have all the information available. Have some sense!

hmmm

This case is very interesting to me. It is however very strange. I'm not exactly understanding why their keeping the cause of death from the public??? They lost me on that one. Maybe if it was told it would trigger something in someone's mind, maybe it could actually lead to clues or evidence. The question is though how does one do this without anyone noticing anything, nothing it all. This person must have wrapped themselves in plastic wrap or something. I really hope the find the moron and hang them. Hopefully this will not go down as a permanently unsolved mystery.

Murderers do allude notice !

"How does a stranger walk into a residential neighborhood, make an entry, commit a murder, exit the scene, all in broad daylight, and never get noticed? Seems to me they need to concentrate on neighbors, family members, or friends - someone who wouldn't stand out as unusual or suspicious if seen in the area."

It happens all the time !! My friend was murdered inisde her own apartment by an intruder and the well trained (forgive me for lying here) Va Beach police have still NOT found her killer !! And that has been 21 years !!!

stop running your traps...

Go to work one day and try to figure out who stole the white-out off your desk without any witnessess, evidence or idea which of your co-workers would do such a thing. You can bet your tails the PPD has been working this case from the moment the victim was found. The dept has let us know there is a dangerous person amongst us but cannot give all the information as to not jepordize the case. I want the same complainers to apologize when an arrest is made.

How?

How does a stranger walk into a residential neighborhood, make an entry, commit a murder, exit the scene, all in broad daylight, and never get noticed? Seems to me they need to concentrate on neighbors, family members, or friends - someone who wouldn't stand out as unusual or suspicious if seen in the area.

Equality

I am glad the PPD is doing so much to solve this crime, it said yesterday there were 20 officers workign thecase on yesterday. I have to wonder though if this young girl was African American how much effort would go into to solving this crime. Everyday we read about African Americans in the city of Portsmouth being raped, gun down, robbed, murdered, I just don't see all this work by the PPD when the victim is of color.
Don't get me wrong I am glad they are working so hard for this girl and her parents, I have a child almost the same age. I just am confused why you don't hear about this type of dilligence with crimes where the victim is African American.

Look for someone close to her

This was probably a thrill killing, and the police need to be investigating people who knew her. It could have been someone in the karate class she was taking.

Here...

we go again Rose. The investigators that have been working this case are very capable. Just because you don't know every little detail of the case doesn't mean they aren't working it. I can tell you that this is ALL that some of the investigators have been concentrating on since this terrible tragedy happened. And YOU have NO IDEA how it makes them feel to have it go on this long without being solved. But if you can do better, pull out that crystal ball you apparently have and help them out some.

Detectives' efforts are not determined by Chief of Police

I am appalled that someone would honestly think that a new Chief of Police would make a difference in solving this crime involving this young girl. We have officers and detectives that are committed to the citizens of Portsmouth, regardless of who the Chief is at that present time. Our officers and detectives are also mothers and fathers and it hits close to home when a child is a victim of any crime. Someone out there knows something. Maybe fear is keeping them from reporting it to the police... Meghan's family deserves justice... It's not fair to withhold information for any reason.

Give Portsmouth a break !

Give Portsmouth a break ! The Va Beach police are THE WORST when it comes to solving murders !! I know of one murder case they haven't solved and it is 21 years old !!!!

here we go again

Hey Rose, who let's you out of your cage at night to post comments on this thing just to get people wound up? If you knew half as much as you think yoou did, you'd be dangerous. You see, sometimes this provides a forum for people to vent, even though they don't have facts or training, or even television viewing experience to back them up. Rose got some kind of charge, drunk in public, soliciting, standing in the roadway and now holds a grudge against police. Let it go and let the police do their job. Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. Don't rush it, for you don't want to get your buggy in front of your horse.

I hope I'm wrong and an arrest is made.

I have seen the many failures of the PPD though. If you click on the "Portsmouth" tab under the "local news" of this site and look back in through the past few months you'll see why there is reason to have doubt in the PPD. Everything from Sheriffs shooting each other, to PPD cruiser running into an ambulance, to a PPD officer being arrested for DUI and the list goes on and on. If indeed the PPD does have a suspect that they haven't arrested yet, I hope they are keeping an around the clock watch on that suspect. Otherwise, what would stop them from killing someone else? If a person is capable of doing this to a young girl, that person has no respect for life at all and would certainly do it again.

Rose should

Tell us more...of what she knows...

I don't agree

I would like to think that the PPD has done some investigating and is acting on the leads that already exist. Not every case is quickly solved and if a suspect is eyed, it takes a bit of time to gather enough evidence for a jury to convict after the arrest. I think the media has been quiet about this for too long on their own and haven't asked more questions of PPD for a reason. I do believe they are investigating, just taking the time to gather the right amount of evidence for a conviction. I can only imagine how her parents are feeling, for their sake I do hope they arrest very, very soon.

After a month the PPD finally decides to investigate.

Great job. This will end up to be one of P-towns many unsolved murders put away in the cold case files that VA Pilot did an article on about two months ago. When is the PPD going to put out the word to the public that there is a very very dangerous murderer in their mist? The PPD should have already asked for help from a more capable investigative force. I feel for the family and friends of this girl. Maybe with a new police chief capable personnel will be brought in.
